Chapter One: The New House
It was alright for a start, the new house and all. On April 25th the Johnson Family pulled up to Conner Street. They came to a black gate and Mr. Johnson got out of the van and started pushing the gate where they could drive in. “Mom, is our house any older than the other one?” Kate asked. Mrs. Johnson shook her head. “No dear.” She replied. She laid her head on her seat. “It’s just fine.” Mr. Johnson climbed back in and drove through the gates and up to the house. The house was huge. It needed some painting but it was fine. One giant oak tree was in the middle of the yard. There were bushes filled with flowers and birds chirped nicely. A roar filled the air. “What in the world?” asked Jimmy, Kate’s seven year old brother. “It’s alright Jim.” Said Kate. She looked around. “I thought I heard a circus tune earlier.” She said. Jimmy hopped out. “Man, if only my buds could see me now!” he said. He took his IPod touch and took a picture of himself with a peace sign. Mrs. Johnson climbed out of the van and stretched. “Kids, we are going to have to unpack soon after the furniture comes.” She said. Jimmy nodded. “I agree I don’t want to do it when I have football practice.” He said. Kate rolled her eyes. Mrs. Johnson unbuckled Lucy, the two year old sister of Kate and Jimmy and she lifted her out and closed the van door with a slam. Mr. Johnson locked the car door and placed the keys in his pocket. “Come on kids.” He said. “We better pick the rooms before the moving van gets here.” He said. They walked up on the porch and Mr. Johnson unlocked the door, stepped in, and flipped on the lights. Everything was full of color. Kate gasped for her old house never, ever had yellow walls inside of it. A dusty chandelier was above them. “Go pick your rooms upstairs kids.” Said Mr. Johnson and Kate and Jimmy ran upstairs. Kate checked room after room. Finally she came to a room which was big enough for her supply of things. “I found my room Dad!” she called. Mr. Johnson ran upstairs and took a piece of paper and wrote Kate on it and he taped it to her door. “Ok, go meet up with your mom.” He said. “Dad I found my room!” called Jimmy. Mr. Johnson ran down the hall and entered the room where he heard Jimmy’s voice. Kate walked downstairs and met with her mother. Lucy was sitting on the floor with her new dress and tights, drinking some orange juice. She looked up at Kate and held up her arms. Kate bent down and picked her up, causing Lucy to drop her cup. Lucy didn’t cry she didn’t like the house either. Mrs. Johnson was walking around the kitchen, holding her stomach were a new baby boy would arrive soon in our story. “Hey Mom.” Spoke Kate. Mrs. Johnson looked at Kate. “Oh hey Kate.” She said. She opened the cabinets and dusted them. Kate placed Lucy down who ran over to her cup and sat down again and began drinking from it. “So…. Have you and Dad picked your room?” asked Kate. Mrs. Johnson was quiet. “I haven’t even seen the rooms.” She said. “The house is mighty big….” Said Kate. She was quiet again, actually the whole room was quiet. Mr. Johnson came downstairs will his Dell Laptop. “Hey girls.” He said and sat at the counter and opened his laptop. “Hi Dad.” Said Kate. Knock, Knock “I got it.” Said Kate and she walked to the front door and opened it. Five or six men stood there with a clipboard. “Who are you?” asked Kate. She lean against the door with her arm up and her head laying against her arm. “Uh… we are The Moving Ostriches Crew.” Said one of the men. “Oh…” said Kate. “Is James Johnson around?” asked the man holding the clipboard. “Oh um yeah, hold on.” Kate turned around, cupped her hands over her mouth and yelled, “DAD!” Mr. Johnson appeared quick. “The Moving Crew.” Said Kate. She pointed at the men. “Oh yes.” Said Mr. Johnson. He walked up and started talking to the men. “Nice family you got there.” Said the man with the clipboard. Mr. Johnson took the clipboard and read the papers and said, “Yes they are the best any man could have.” He said. He wrote on the clipboard and handed it to the man. “Ok men, start bringing in the furniture.” He said. All the men including himself left. Kate looked at Mr. Johnson. “Can I show them to my room?” asked Kate. “Only the men with your furniture.” He said. Kate sighed and when two men came in with her bed she led them to her room and they placed it right in front of the huge window. Then when two men came with her dresser she led them to her room  and they placed it next to her closet doors. Then when two men came in with her bedside table she led them to her room and they placed the bedside table there and then another one on the other side of her bed. Then when two men came up with a desk she led them upstairs to her room and they placed the desk right in front of the bed, blocking the doorway from the front way of the bed. Then they carried Kate’s rolling chair and placed it in front of her desk. Then they carried up two bing-bags and they placed them a few feet away from the wall closet to the bathroom next door to her room. Then they carried another desk, this time smaller and placed it in front of the bing bags. Then Kate and the men went to the moving van and brought boxes with Kate wrote on the side. When they left Kate’s room, Kate dug around in boxes and found her IPod charger player. She plugged it in and placed it on her desk and put her IPod on it and started playing music. Then she opened one box and found her lamp and lampshade. She took it out, placed the lampshade on the lamp, plugged it in and placed one on the desk in front of her bed, another on the side table to the right and another to the side table on the left. Then she took her jewelry box and placed it on top of her dresser and she took a some books by the same author; Mary Hampshire and placed it on top of the dresser. She pushed that box aside and opened another with red covers and white sheets in it. She took the sheets and laid them on her bed and she took the covers, spread it on her bed and smoothed out the wrinkles. She took two white pillows from the next box and two red and puffed them up and she placed them on the covers. Then she stretched and yawned. “I’m tired.” Mumbled Kate. “But I have more to do.” And with those words she got on her knees again and opened another box. She came to her clothes which she placed in her dresser; pajamas, bathing suits, underwear, and shorts. Then she took her dresses, jeans, shirts, jackets, and sweaters and placed them on hangers. When she placed them on hangers she opened her closet and placed them on poles. She opened another box with two more boxes which she took out and placed them above her clothes in her closet. Then she took her shoes that were in pairs and lined them up under her clothes in the closet. She placed a red furry rug in front of the bing bags and she took her TV, VCR, and DVD player and carefully plugged it in. Then she tested to see if it would all work. Ring, ring Kate opened her side purse and took out her cell phone; a picture of her best friend Stacey was there. Kate pushed the green button and pressed it against her ear and shoulder. “Hello?” she said. “Hey Kate!” said Stacey. “Hey.” Said Kate. She took out another red rug and placed it on both sides of her bed. “What’s up?” asked Kate. “Well today I remembered you moved when I went down to your house and knocked on the door.” Said Stacey. “So when you didn’t answer I turned and saw the for sale sign and across it was sold. And the door opened and a lady was there and she said hi. After she said hi I got on my bike and rode home and called you.” “Nice story.” Said Kate and she grinned. “The house is larger than my old house. I haven’t seen every room yet.” She grinned and laughed. “I haven’t even known that we had a parlor!” she laughed. “How do you know?” asked Stacey. She heard shuffling. “What was that?” asked Kate. “Timothy.” She said. “Oh.” Said Kate. “Well anyways my mom told me.” She said. “Oh, hey when’s the baby coming?” “Next week.” Replied Kate. She put her brush and combs and rubber bands and headbands away. “Why?” she asked. “Well I was hoping I would meet the baby in person before you moved.” Said Stacey. “Oh, well you can see him this Summer.” Said Kate. “Really?” asked Stacey. Kate rolled her eyes and said, “Yes.” And she heard Stacey screaming. Kate took her soccer ball out of a box and shined it and placed it in its case and placed it on the desk. “Hey I got to go, it’s time for dinner.” Said Stacey. Kate looked out the window where the sun was setting. “Ok, bye.” She said. Stacey mumbled something and said, “Bye.” And they both hung up. Kate put the boxes on top of each other and placed her cell phone in her purse and walked downstairs to the garbage can outside. She pushed the boxes into her trashcan and heard a voice. She turned around towards her house but there was nothing. Kate shrugged. I’m hearing things again. She thought. But Kate was way off course. She wasn’t hearing things. The thing she heard had been real.

Chapter Two: Friends
A couple of weeks later, Kate was outside. She was wearing a blue skirt and a blue shirt. The skirt had dark blue stripes on it and the shirt was plain. She wore blue heels and some white tights and she sat on a swing Mr. Johnson had put on the oak tree in the front. Mrs. Johnson was swinging on the porch and Lucy was on the porch with her Barbies banging Ken’s head against the floor. Jimmy was skateboarding in the driveway and Mr. Johnson was at Greenville High School typing his lesson plans on his school computer. Jimmy did a three sixty and landed it.
Stacey: So was ups?
Kate: The usual, Jims skateboardin’ and Lucy banging Ken again lol ;o I miss you guys!
Stacey: I too.
Kate: =D
Stacey: =[ I got to go.
Kate: But we just started texting
Stacey: I have to do something.
Kate: Ok bye txt you late
Stacey: Bye
Kate: Bye
Kate put her phone in her purse and heard bike wheels. She stood up and turned around. A boy was riding on his bike and turned back towards her direction and rode towards a house. Kate opened the gate and saw a couple of girls in front of a house talking and standing on roller blades. The boy did a Ollie on the curb and twisted and landed and stopped. “Good job Tyler!” said the girls and clapped their hands. Kate looked at Mrs. Johnson and yelled, “I’ll be back!” then she slipped out of the gate and walked towards the girls. “Hi.” Said Kate. The girls looked at her. “Hey, what’s up?” asked one girl. “Nothing, My name is Kate Marie Johnson. I’m new in the neighborhood.” She reached out her hand and shook hands with the girl who had spoke with her. “Grace Della Thompson and these are my friends; Melissa, Sam, Claire and Fern.” The girls behind her waved. “And that’s Tyler.” Said Sam and she pointed at the boy. “I overheard you guys saying his name.” said Kate. “Cool, you live next door?” asked Claire. “Yeah, we are getting the house painted today.” Said Kate. “I always wanted to live in that house.” Said Fern. “Hey I said that yesterday!” said Melissa, turning to Fern. “Well I said it today!” said Fern. She placed her hands on her hips. Tyler rode by and whistled at Kate. “What was that for?” asked Kate. She turned to Grace. “He likes you.” Said Claire. “Oh…. Melody is going to be very mad!” said Sam. “Who’s Melody?” asked Kate. “Tyler’s girlfriend. She’s a bully to us but to Tyler she’s cute and there’s nothing wrong with her.” Said Melissa. “She doesn’t do one sport!” said Claire. “I want to strangle her.” Said Fern. “Hey guys we all know Tyler is kind of our friend.” Said Grace. She turned to Kate. “Tyler doesn’t like us like he likes you. He will whistle every time he sees a cute girl.” Said Grace. “We call him the Whistler.” Said Sam. “Weird name…” said Kate. “We know.” Said Fern. “He’s a champion at skateboarding.” Said Claire. “No kidding, so’s my brother!” said Kate. “Sweet, do you go to Greenville Middle School?” asked Grace. “Yeah.” Said Kate. “Spring break ends next week.” Said Sam. “See you later Kate.” Said the girls and they ran to their houses. Kate walked home and went inside and sat at the counter. Ding Dong went the doorbell. Kate opened it and there was Papa John’s. “Mom!” shouted Kate. Mrs. Johnson ran downstairs with Lucy wailing in her arms. She gave the Papa John’s person the money and Kate took it and closed the door. She placed it on the table. “Hey Lucy look!” said Kate. She held up cheese pizza. “You want some don’t you?” asked Kate. Lucy wiped her tears and nodded. “Well you have to stop crying.” Said Kate. She took some cheese pizza and placed it on a plate and began eating it. Jimmy ran downstairs. “Yum! Papa John’s Pizza sweet!” he said. And he sat down and began eating it. Kate rolled her eyes. Today had been the best day of her life.

Chapter Three: The New Johnson
A few days after meeting the girls Mrs. Johnson woke up screaming. This woke up everybody which everybody ran  to the parents room. Mr. Johnson was putting on his white shirt quickly. He tucked it in and pulled on a black jacket and stuffed his shirt under his pants. He pulled on brown shoes and ran to Mrs. Johnson, picked her up and ran out of the room. “Kate you are in charge!” shouted Mr. Johnson. He opened and closed the door. Kate turned to Jimmy and picked up Lucy. “We might as well get ready for today.” Said Kate. She walked to her room and pulled on a nice light red shirt and put on a dark red sweater and pulled on white tights and some white heels. Then she dressed Lucy in a blue jean dress with her white tights and placed white shoes on her. Then she placed a white bow in her blond hair and then she placed Lucy on the ground. Kate walked to her room and took a brush and brushed her hair and put a little of her hair into a bow. Then she walked downstairs where Jimmy and Lucy were. Kate made some bacon and eggs and served it to them. After a while Mr. Johnson appeared. “Your mother is having the baby children.” He said. He took some bacon and began eating it. “I need to go to work.” He wiped it mouth. “Bye.” He said and took his Dell Laptop and left. When he left Jimmy stood up and went across the street with his friend, Dillian. Kate picked up Lucy. “Hey, you ready to become a big sister like me?” asked Kate. Lucy shook her head. “I want to be the youngest.” Said Lucy. Kate laughed. “Well I felt that way too.” She said. She walked outside and went towards her friends.
*
After a few days passed Kate, Lucy, and Jimmy went to the hospital to see Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson lay in a bed, holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket. “Kids,” said Mrs. Johnson. “This is Joel.” She said. She showed the baby to Kate, Lucy and Jimmy. Lucy screamed. “Why can’t I be youngest?” she ran out of the room. “Kate go talk to your sister.” Said Mr. Johnson. Kate rolled her eyes. “Kate, don’t give me that look.” Said Mr. Johnson. Kate walked outside and sat beside Lucy who was on a bench. “Hey, don’t cry. Whenever Joel gets older then you can boss him around.” Said Kate. “Like I boss you around.” Lucy giggled. “And he will be scares of me?” she asked. Kate nodded. “Yep.” She said. “Being the youngest isn’t that much fun.” She said. Lucy shrugged. “I guess he was kinda cute.” She said. Kate smiled. “Now come on, let’s go meet Joel.” She said. Kate and Lucy went in and they talked and began holding Joel, the new addition to the Johnson family tree.

Chapter Four: The First Meeting
“Guys our town is falling apart!” said Grace at Junior High. “You know our favorite author; Mary Hampshire?” asked Sam. “Yeah.” Said Fern. “Well her stories are coming true in this town!” said Sam. “What can we do?” asked Kate. “Research!” said Sam. She ran into the library. The girls followed her. “Mrs. Rachel, do you have any newspapers?” asked Sam. “Yes I do.” She said. “About Mary Hampshire?” asked Fern. Mrs. Rachel, the Liberian paused. “Quite a lot.” She said. When they began reading the newspapers they began doing more research. Tyler walked into the library and walked over to them and put one arm over Kate and the other on the table and began reading the paper. “Sweet.” Said Tyler. He took a newspaper himself and began reading it. “Hey this isn’t words!” said Tyler. “What?” asked Fern. They looked at the newspaper. Only four letter words that made no sense were there ‘defa mofa fhfg fngbb’ “What does that mean?” asked Claire. “We don’t know!” said Grace. She rolled her eyes and began to read over it. “Guys, Mary Hampshire disasspeared.” Said Fern. They looked at Fern’s paper;
Mary Hampshire’s Disappearance
Last week, famous Mary Hampshire disappeared in her own house. Could she be dead?
“Horrible!” gasped the girls. “Sweet.” Said Tyler. Grace punched him in the chest, knocking the air out of him. “Ok, guys we really have a mystery on our hands.” Said Grace. She stood up, took a folder and began writing down names. “Kate, your job is to go to the graveyard and write down every name you can find!” said Grace. When she was done giving jobs she said, “We can’t contact with the dead. But apparently Mary Hampshire had some way of doing it. If we find this code out,” she held up the paper. “We find out how to contact with the dead and how to find Mary Hampshire.” She said. Everybody was applied to Grace’s idea so that’s what happened.

Chapter Five: The Graveyard
Kate made her way towards the graveyard with a list and pen. She gulped when she saw it. She stepped in and walked around writing names; Grace Marine, Thomas Shell, Frances Shell, Marie Clock wire
Ring, ring went Kate’s cell phone. Kate paused and answered the phone. “Hello?” she said. “Kate where are you?” asked Mr. Johnson. “Downtown writing names from the graveyard.” Said Kate. “Oh my goodness Kate Marie Johnson! I’m coming down there to get you right now!” said Mr. Johnson and he hung up. Kate sighed and hung up. She turned to another in which she was then familiar with Tyler Rojas said the gravestone. Kate rode it down when she heard a branch click and she turned around. Mr. Johnson was there. “Time to go home Kate, your mother is sleeping and she needs help with your brothers and sister.” He said. He put his arm around Kate and led her to the van. Kate turned around. She gulped. Then she got in the car and her dad drove to the house.
“But I want to see mama!” whined Lucy. Kate looked down at Joel who was holding his arms up and whining. Kate bent down and picked him up from the crib in the living room. Jimmy and his friends; Justin, Dick, and Tommy were playing video games. “Jimmy please help me!” said Kate. “Shush Lucy, I still have to make you guys lunch.” Said Kate. “Please Jimmy, I have a lot of stuff to do!” said Kate. She sighed. “No shut up! I’m fixing to beat Browser Kate!” said Jimmy. Kate bent down to Lucy and looked her in the eyes. “After lunch you and Joel are taking a nap.” She said. “No!” whined Lucy. Kate walked to the kitchen and turned on the stove. “I don’t want to take a nap!” said Lucy. She stomped her foot. “I want to stay right here!” she said. Kate took the kettle and filled it with water. “Too bad Lucy.” She said. She placed the kettle on the stove and took bread out. “Mama is taking a nap, she’s ill.” Said Kate. She pulled hair behind her ears and put Joel in the crib in the living room. “Joel come here, you can sit with us.” Said Jimmy. He paused the game and walked over to pick up Joel. “Oh, so you can do that but can’t help me huh?” said Kate. She put peanut butter and jelly on five sandwiches. She then took apple sauce and placed it on the high chair. Then she placed the sandwiches on the counter and on another high chair. She made herself a ham sandwich, walked over, picked up Joel and put him in the high chair. Then she lifted Lucy up and placed her in the high chair. Joel giggled. Kate placed the bib on him. Lucy took the sandwich and bit into it. Jimmy, Tommy, Dick and Justin ran to the table and sat at the counter. Ring, ring went her phone. Kate picked up her phone pressed the green button and placed it against her ear and shoulder and opened the jar of apple sauce and gave a spoonful to Joel. “Hello?” she said. “Hey Kate, it’s Grace.” Said Grace. “Oh hey Grace, what’s up?” asked Kate. “Well how’s your job so far?” she asked. Joel picked up the jar and dumped it on his head and giggled. The boys started laughing and Lucy giggled. “Not so good.” Said Kate. She stood up and picked up a napkin and cleaned Joel’s face. “What’s that noise?” asked Grace. “My siblings and his friends.” Said Kate. She sat down and began eating her own food. “Oh, well what’s bad about it?” asked Grace. “Oh it is going great it’s just that I came across a certain name. And I am certain that it is familiar.” Said Kate. “What is it?” asked Grace. “Tyler Rojas.” Said Kate. “No way! That’s Tyler!” said Grace. “He can’t be a ghost.” Said Kate. “Exactly!” said Grace. “I call you back.” Said Grace. She hung up on Kate and Kate put her phone up. She took Lucy out of her high chair and she picked up Joel. She laid Joel in his crib upstairs and she laid Lucy off to bed. Suddenly there was a knock of the door. Kate froze and quietly walked downstairs. She opened it slowly. There was Tyler. Kate gasped and stepped away. “G-get away from me!” said Kate. Tyler stepped closer. “What do you want?” asked Kate. A girl stepped in.

Chapter Six: Who in the World?
“Who are you?” asked Kate. The girl flipped her hair. “I’m Melody.” She said. Kate gasped. “Y-you…. You are evil.” Said Kate. Melody nodded and stepped closer. “Yes girl I am. If ghosts are real then god is real and if god is real…” suddenly she appeared as a devil. “Then the devil is.” She grinned. Kate screamed on the top of her lungs. Jimmy ran in. “Hey!” he said. Kate covered her head and looked up. Jimmy held a sword and shield. “Leave my sis alone!” he said. Melody floated up to him and clawed at him. He held up his shield and slayed her arm. She screamed and grabbed onto his head. He swung his sword up and struck her waist. She screamed louder. Kate sat up and scooted backwards. Tommy, Dick and Justin helped Kate up and she stared as Melody’s arms disasspeared. When she disasspeared Kate saw Tyler’s leg move away. “Tyler,” she stepped to him. He put his hands on her face and smiled. And when he leaned in to kiss her he disasspeared and Kate kissed thin air. “Tyler…” she sat down in a hump, laid her hair on her arm and covered her head with her other arm. “Don’t feel bad Kate.” Said Jimmy. Kate looked up. Jimmy stood there. His sword and shield was gone. “He was one of them.” He sighed. “I am not though, but I can contact with the spirits.” He said. Kate sat up. “Why don’t you tell mom and dad?” she asked. Jimmy’s lip trembled. “Because I’m adopted.” He said. Kate gasped. “But how?” she asked. “When you were a baby I froze time and I made myself younger and my parents died. When I placed myself in the orphanage I made everybody in the orphanage know me and changed my name.” he said. “I have a gift and I can’t tell them, they don’t know.” He said. Kate stood up and hugged him. “Oh Jimmy… I didn’t know.” She said. Jimmy shook his head. “It’s alright, It’s my fault my parents died.” He said. He started crying. Mr. Johnson came in. “Kate, what did you do to your brother this time?” he walked to Jimmy and hugged him. “Go to your room now Kate Marie Johnson!” he said. Kate, without arguing, walked upstairs to her bedroom and grinned. “Dad doesn’t know… and nor does mom.” She said. She laid on her bed and closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Chapter Seven: The Second Meeting
“Tyler died?” said Sam. “Yeah, I saw him die.” Said Kate. “How awful, even when he liked you!” said Fern. “Melody must be sad.” Said Grace. She looked at Fern. “No, no, no! Melody is glad! She is the devil!” said Kate. “She is harsh but she isn’t the devil.” Said Fern. “Yes she is!” said Kate. “My brother, Jimmy, yeah he fought her! She turned into sand!” she said. “She turned into the devil before my own eyes! Jimmy is older than me!” she said. “Kate you are crazy.” Said Fern. The girls all walked to the library and picked out ghost books. “Contact with the Spirit World.” Read Fern aloud. “Read it!” said the girls. Fern opened and read; “The only way to contact the spirit world is to be in the dark with a candle lit, and you say the words; Spirits rise and spirits live, come and tell me what they are.” “Cool.” Said the girls. They walked up to the librarian and checked it out.
When it was dark the girls met each other at the graveyard when their families were asleep. “3:00.” Said Grace. “Time we read the book, the demons are out.” She said. They lit a candle and opened the book and read it. They looked around and suddenly ghosts appeared from their graves. Even Tyler appeared and Melody. And suddenly Melody looked at them and screamed, “KILL THEM!”

Chapter Eight: Ghosts vs. People
Five thousand demons charged towards the girls. Jimmy, Dick, Tommy and Justin popped out and started fighting them. They each tossed the girls a sword. The girls charged and began slicing at ghosts. They slid heads off demons. Jimmy charged toward the devil; Melody turned and looked at him and grinned. “Time we end this.” She said. She charged after him. Kate looked out of the corner of her eye. “NO!” she screamed. Melody stabbed Jimmy’s chest and he fell to the ground. Everything froze to Kate. Kate dodged past the swords that went towards her. She bent down to Jimmy and pulled him out of the way.

A few hours passed and the people won. The ghosts disasspeared and there was a howl and then it faded away. Kate gasped and began crying. A tear hit his face and suddenly he opened his eyes. “Kate, take me to the hospital.” He whispered. Kate opened her phone, dialed 911 and the ambulance came and took him to the hospital.

Chapter Nine: All that’s well, ends well
Yeah well, the Johnson family wondered why they had been out in the first place. I mean don’t you think you’re parents would you think you were crazy if you said ‘Well you see I fought the devil and some ghosts last night.’ Yeah, I know pretty weird huh? Yeah, yeah. Well just to let you know on the bright side Jimmy healed and everything was back to normal. And a few nights later when Kate was falling asleep she heard a howl. She screamed and Jimmy opened the door and laughed and he climbed in bed beside her and they both fell asleep.

The End…..

Elizabeth Anderson #1

Elizabeth Anderson
By: Emma Ladner

Chapter One: Pete
I stepped off the wagon. The giant house of my uncle and aunt stood a few feet before me. The man handed me my bags and walked away. I opened the gate and closed it. The lawn was nice and green. The trees had leaves that looked like giant oaks. There were flowers and bushes and I saw rabbits nibbling on a rose. “Hi there.” I said. I sat down to the rabbit and pulled it into my lap. A shadow covered me and I gasped. I looked up. A man with blond hair and green eyes and was wearing jeans and a shirt saying 1851 on it. I screamed. “Don’t hurt me!” I screamed. I curled myself into a ball onto the ground. I sat there in a ball and when I looked up the boy was gone. I looked around. The boy was nowhere. I stood up and picked up my bags and ran to the house. A little fountain of a boy holding a bucket above his head was there. The water was coming from the bucket because it was tipped. I ran up to the porch and knocked on the door. “Hello?” I asked. Nothing. I knocked again. “Hello?” I asked. The door opened and before me stood a woman. She had black hair and green eyes. Her skin was pale and she wore a green gown. She looked like me. Just I was five. I waved. “Hello.” I said. She went down to my level and stared in my eyes. “Your Elizabeth.” She said. She stood up and smiled at me and took my hand. “Come in Elizabeth.” She said. We walked inside to an open room. There was two staircases leading up to one ledge. There were oil lamps lit and the chandelier above me was brighten. I followed her into the kitchen where five people were. “Hello.” I said. The maids curtsied. “Elizabeth these are our cooks.” She said. She pointed to the girl closet to me. She wore a black dress with a white apron like the rest. Her hair was brown with curls and her eyes were black. “This is Martha.” Said my aunt. She pointed to the next. “This is Carol.” She said. She pointed to the next one. “This is Mia.” Said my aunt. She pointed to the next. “Claire.” She pointed to the next. “Lucy.” She said. I looked around at all of them. They were making cookies and cake and hamburgers. I followed her into the library where an old lady stood. Her fingers were thin and her hair was white. She had green eyes. “This is your grandmother.” Said my aunt. I looked at her and she looked at me. “You remind me of your father.” She said. She gave me a hug and returned to her study. She walked into a room next door. A man with black hair and a beard and blue eyes sat at the big desk. The room was painted green and the desk was bright brown. There were two couches and an arm chair. There was another chandelier. “Thomas, this is our niece Elizabeth.” Said my aunt. The man looked at me. “You look so much like your father dear girl.” He said. He laughed. “Also I have something for you to keep. Your father gave it to me for safe keeping because he didn’t want these two things being lost or stolen.” He said. He picked up a silver locket with a “S” on it. And a photo was in his hand. He lifted my hair up and put the locket on me. I opened the locket. A woman with black hair and blue eyes was grinning at the camera. On the other side my father. He had a beard that attached to his mustache and side burns. He grinned at the camera. His eyes were gentle but my mother’s were way to gentle. She looked like a teddy bear. Wandering about to the place. “Don’t worry child.” She said. I smiled at her and closed the locket. My father handed me a photo with my parents and me in it. I was about a baby. “Thank you.” I said. He nodded. A man came in and took my stuff. “Excuse me, where are you taking my things?” I asked. “To your bedroom.” He said. He wore a little green hat. He went out of the room. “I shall show you to your room. Surely you want to rest.” Said my aunt. She led me up a staircase to a room. The room was huge. It was painted blue with a big picture of my mother and father. There was a white wardrobe with golden handles. My bed had a room that was white. The covers were white and so for my pillows. I felt like a princess. There was balcony. And then there was a window seat. The pillows were green and the seat was blue. The maids put my books onto my shelves since I was too little. And put away my clothes. I took my locket off and placed it in my white jewelry box that had gold on it. “Woof!” barked a dog from next door. I put the locket up and looked behind me. The door wasn’t open. I placed the photo on my desk and walked to the doors. I opened them. Next door a boy my age was playing with his dog. I watched. He looked up at me and waved. I backed away from the ledge. I slipped off my dress and pulled on my white one and climbed in my bed. I sat up grabbed my rag doll, Miley, and went to sleep. The maids closed my doors and lowered the light of the oil lamp and chandelier.
I woke up in the afternoon and pulled on my robe and slipped on my slippers. I walked out of my room and when the maids saw me emerge from my bedroom they went in to make my bed. I walked downstairs where my aunt and uncle were talking. “Ah, you are up I see.” Said my uncle. I nodded. “Yes, I had a pleasant sleep.” I said. “Well we are having lunch on the back porch. Go get some clothes on.” Said my uncle. I nodded and my uncle and aunt proceeded back to their conversation. I walked upstairs to my room and took out a blue dress with a dark blue sash. I slipped off my nightgown and robe and put my robe on my door and put my nightgown up. I put on the dress and tied the sash around my waist. I walked to my mirror and brushed my hair. I put on blue shoes and walked downstairs. The porch door was opened. I walked outside. Lunch was served; sandwiches of course with a little tea. I sat down. “Aunt Linda, I saw a boy in the front.” I said. “Probably one of the mowers dear.” Said my aunt. She took a bite of her sandwich. “No he was trying to kill me.” I said. I looked down at my sandwich and picked up and began eating it. “What did he look like?” asked my uncle. He burped. “Excuse me.” He said. He dabbed at his mouth with a napkin. “Well he had blond hair and he wore a shirt of the year 1851 on it.” I said. My aunt began crying. “What is wrong Aunt Linda?” I asked. My uncle brought me into the next room. The boy you saw was our son, your cousin. He died but we have no idea how. But how did you see him?” asked my uncle. “He just appeared.” I said. “Elizabeth look, do not go into the front without my permission, understood?” asked my uncle. “Yes sir.” I said. “Good.” Said my uncle. We sat down to eat lunch again but while I ate my lunch I wondered, how had Pete died? And how was I going to get to know his answer?
Chapter Two: The Missing Photo
In the middle of September I was upstairs in my room. It was raining outside and the boy I saw in August was outside doing yard work with his brothers. I was wearing a red dress with my locket. My hair was curled and I sat on my bed writing for my grade. “Elizabeth! Come down here!” shouted my uncle. “Coming!” I said. I left my quill in the ink bottle and walked downstairs. My uncle was at the library looking through a photo album. I stood in front of him. “Yes sir?” I asked. “Did you add photo to the gallery?” he asked. “No sir.” I said. “Well why is this here?” he asked. I walked behind him and looked at the picture. It was me, writing my essay. “I didn’t add that.” I said. “Oh well, dear go up into your room.” Said my uncle. I walked upstairs to my bedroom and sat on my bed writing my essay and looking around. The room was still and all I could here was my uncle dancing to some music. The rain was falling on my window. The clock chimed one o’clock. I capped my ink bottle and put my quill away and looked at my essay.

I smiled at it and put it on my dresser. I looked around for the photo of my parents and I. But it was nowhere. Maybe the maids took it. I walked downstairs to the headquarters. “Did anyone take a photo from my bedroom?” I asked. All of the maids shook their heads. I walked into the library where my uncle was. “Uncle, do you know where my photo is?” I asked. “Ask your Aunt.” Said my uncle. I walked to my aunt’s room. “Aunt Linda, did you take my photo?” I asked. “No dear.” Said my aunt. I looked around her room. And in the corner I saw my aunt Linda and my Uncle Bob at their wedding. Both smiling, grinning and in the background my parents. They were smiling too. I smiled at the picture and suddenly I heard something upstairs. I ran into my room and took my oil lamp and went to the attic. Of course I was scared! I looked around my arm trembling. A mouse ran by foot. I jumped and screamed. Bats flew out. I turned around and around and heard moving. “Hello?” I asked. I walked slowly towards the noise. I moved the boxes out of the way. “Leave me alone whoever you are.” I said. I looked around and there was the photo. I picked it up and my uncle ran in. “Dear lord girl! Come down this instant! You probably ruined the dress Mrs. Nimble made you.” Said my uncle. As I walked towards my uncle I was sure something else from behind was watching me. And the other thing I was wondering was how did my photo get into the attic?

Chapter Three: Tom
I was on my bed with Miley. My uncle and aunt had brought me a German Sheppard dog. She sat on my bed snoring. I was rubbing her back and reading a Nancy Drew Mystery when my door opened. I turned around. There was my uncle. “Hello Elizabeth dear.” He said. He looked under my bed. “What are you looking for Uncle Bob?” I asked. “My spectacles are missing.” Said my uncle. “Have you checked your office?” I asked. “Well I- no.” he said. He walked out my room and closed the door. Two years ago I had moved into this house. I returned my book. My dog, Emily raised her head and began barking. She ran to the door. I folded my page down and tossed Miley on my bed. I took Emily’s leash and hooked it onto her. “Ok Emily.” I said. I opened the door and we walked downstairs. Thomas, the door manager opened the door and Emily rushed out. She dragged me down the stairs into the mud. “Emily stop!” I shouted. But she did not. She raced next door, dragging me in the mud. I closed my mouth and eyes. This was it. I was going to hurl. Emily stopped in front of another dog. He was huge. A boy came out. “Hey leave me dog alone!” said the boy. He ran towards me. And stopped. “Oh sorry.” He said. He put a stick down. “Yes.” I said. I took my white hat and curled it where the water and mud washed out. “My clothes are wet and dirty and my aunt and uncle are going to freak.” I said. “My name’s Tom.” Said the boy. I could tell he was ignoring what I was saying. “Elizabeth.” I said. I shook his hand. “Sorry about the clothes.” He said. His mother ran out. “Oh you poor thing. Come in, I’ll wash your clothes and you can wear one of my t-shirts.” She said. She poured some hot water into a tub and pulled the curtains over it. I took off my clothes behind the curtain and handed them to her. She handed me the shirt which I placed on the floor and got into the tub. The water rushed into my skin. I rubbed water over me and washed my hair. I dried myself with a towel and put the shirt on. When I walked behind. Emily and Tom’s dog. Boston were sitting on the couch asleep. “Your dogs fell in love fast.” Said Tom’s brother, Zack. “Yeah maybe you two are the next ones.” Said Tom’s other brother, Kyle. “Where’s this girl anyways?” asked Zack. “Right here.” I said. The boys gasped. “The mayor’s niece?” they asked. “Yes.” I said. Tom’s mother handed me the clothes in which I stepped behind the curtain and dressed again and took Emily. “I’ll see you later.” Said Tom. “Thanks but, I think I had enough for a day.” I said. “Ok bye.” Said Tom. He closed the door. Suddenly something grabbed my shoulders. The boy from two years ago that tried to kill me stared in my eyes. “Hello.” He said. I slapped him but my hand went through. I screamed and ran. I ran into the house to my aunt and uncle’s room. Pete floated above me. “Boo.” He said. “Ahh!” I screamed. My aunt and uncle looked around. “Elizabeth there is nothing in here.” Said my aunt. “Yes there is!” I screamed. How did they not see it? Suddenly he dissapered and I stopped screaming. “Out!” shouted my uncle. I walked outside the room and he slammed the door. Emily sat at the door. I rubbed her ears. “Don’t worry.” I said. I looked up. “I know there’s something up.”

Chapter Four: Millie
At age ten I had learned many things, reading, photo taking, sewing, making my bed, planting flowers, science, and geography. But the thing I never forgot was Pete. The way he grinned at me. I knew something was up. I was sitting on my bed when Emily began pawing the door. I stood up latched the leash on her and opened the door. Slowly she walked down the stairs and outside. She ran towards the courtyard, dragging me after her. “Wait Emily!” I said. I let go and she ran into the woods. “Oh no!” I said. I ran to the barn and took out my white horse; Beauty and rode her into the forest. Emily was panting by a grave of an angel. Her leash hole was in the angel’s hand. I looked at the tombstone. Millie Fran 1561-1578 Beloved Mother and Daughter
I looked at the angel but instead of the angel was woman. She had black hair and a white dress. She had wings on and her hand was holding the leash. She handed it to me. “You have a very special power dear child.” She said. “Why?” I asked. “Because you can see ghosts, your father once could and whenever he married his mother and you were born his powers went to you and he could no longer see ghosts.” She said. “How do you know my father?” I asked. “Because I was his girlfriend before he married your mother.” She said. “This forest used to be a nice apple orchard, where we first met. We were on our fifteenth date when a man in the woods stepped out and grabbed my neck and killed me.” She said. I gulped. “That doesn’t sound pretty.” I said. Chills ran up and down my spine. I turned around, there was Pete. “About time you emerge Millie.” He said. “Go away Pete.” Said Millie. “What’s wrong, scared of your own shadow?” he asked. I ran up to him. “Hey stop! She doesn’t have a shadow and nor do you! And I suggest you stop teasing her before I make you.” I said. “Oh, I shall tell your uncle and aunt. They shall be very disappointed.” Said Pete. “Don’t you dare.” I said. But he left, leaving me and Millie. “PETE!” I shouted. But he was nowhere. “Thank you for standing up to me Elizabeth.” She said. “How do you know my name?” I asked. “Because I know. I’m a ghost, aren’t I?” she asked. I nodded. “Yes, but you are so beautiful you don’t look like one.” I said. “Yes because I went to heaven, Pete didn’t.” he said. I gulped. “I can tell the difference.” I said. “Dear child, do not be scared of me. I’m nothing more than a speck of dust.” She said. I giggled. “Not really.” I said. “Now you need to stop Pete.” She said. “How?” I asked. “Take the picture of your mother from the locket and show it to him.” Said Millie. “Why?” I asked. “He was in love with your mother.” Said Millie. “But she is his aunt.” I said. “Go hurry!” she said. I ran towards Beauty when I came to an tombstone. I read it; Ella Anderson 1860-1861 Beloved Daughter. I ran towards the house on my horse. Emily followed. My red cloak ran out behind me. “Pete, I have something for you.” I said. Pete stopped. I slid off the horse. I handed him the picture. “My aunt.” Said Pete. He looked at the picture and then at me. “You look so much like her.” He said. “I liked her you know.” He said. “Yes I do know.” I said. “I like you too.” He said. I couldn’t breathe. A evil ghost that was sent downwards liked me? How could this be possible? I stepped backward. “Please, I won’t hurt you.” He said. “Then what happened to your sister?” I asked. He stopped. “How do you know about her?” he asked. “I saw her grave.” I said. “Nothing.” He said. He looked around. “You killed her.” I said. “No.” He said. “Yes.” I said. I stepped towards him. “You killed her Pete.” I said. “I didn’t mean too.” He said. “Yes you did.” I said. I stepped towards him. “You faked hit her with a knife on the dock Pete. She fell in and drowned and you just watched and laughed.” I said. “No I didn’t.” He said. I could see he was worried. “Yes you did Pete.” I said. “NO! I DID NOT!” He said. Suddenly his arms started disappearing. “Now look at what you did!” he said. His legs disappeared. “STOP MAKING ME YELL!” He shouted. “I’m not making you Pete.” I said. “YES YOU ARE!” He shouted. His stomach disappeared. “STOP MAKING ME MAD! I WILL-“ he said. But his head disappeared and instead of Pete stood sand. “You kill everybody you knew Pete. But you never killed your family.” I said. I swept the sand into the bayou and felt the April air. I would never see Pete again. But what I didn’t know was that my parents were right beside me, hugging me. The air blew my hair back out of my face and I looked around at the house. It was beautiful, just as always. I remembered when I first entered, when I first saw Pete, when I first saw Tom and how I treated him before he died, what Emily did with one of her pups [ate it because it was a runt], and how my parent’s photo disappeared. My parents were there now. And I knew it. I hugged both sides. And when I hugged them I felt breathing and a soft kiss on my head. I looked up at the sun and breathed in. “Elizabeth! Emily is having puppies!” shouted my aunt. I looked around and ran inside. I had a family, I had a home and even better… I had a gift. The End

Grace

Grace
By: Emma Ladner

Chapter One: Villa
The first time I stepped off that carriage the first thing I saw was an ugly looking yard and house. There were trees that had leaves but everything else had weeds and vines covering it. I opened the brown gate that used to be white and closed it. A boy was staring at me from next door. He sat on the fence watching my every move. I walked down the path and came to a beautiful fountain. It used to be beautiful. It was covered in vines and was brown. There was no water around it. Everything was dead all around it. It was an angel. And on both sides there was one path leading to different directions. One to the courtyard and the other to the maze and barn. I gulped. This place wasn’t very welcoming. I walked up to the house and nearly threw up. The house was black no color at all. Vines and weeds covered it and at first I thought I saw a raccoon climbing up the side of the house. The legging was broken and the swings of the porch were broken. The doors were grey and the windows were dusty. In fact all the windows were dusty. I slowly knocked on the door. A woman with a straight body opened the door. She had a bun in her hair and her eyes were green. Her hair was grey and she wore a black dress. The governess, I thought. She stared down at me. “What do you want?” she asked. “I’m Grace Bicket.” I said. “Nobody knows that name here.” She said. “Isn’t this James Bicket’s house?” I asked. “Yes why?” she asked. “Well my daddy is his brother and they died and….” I began. “Child hurry up! I haven’t got all day!” she yelled. “Meg? What are you yelling at?” asked a deep voice. But it was kind and gentle. A plump man who had a brown beard with blue eyes appeared at the doorway. He had my father’s face, my nose, my eyes. “Are you Mr. James?” I asked. “Yes.” He said. “I’m Grace Bicket.” I said. “Oh my!”  he said. He stared at me. “How big you have grown! I wondered where I knew those eyes from! Come in! Come in! Out of the cold.” He said. I stepped in. My furry coat was taken by a man. He wore a black jacket and brown shoes. His pants were grey and his shirt bright white. He had a red puffy mustache. “Miss Gracie.” He bowed. He took my jacket and hung it on a hook. I gave him my hat, and my gloves. I stared at my Uncle. “This is Thomas, the door butler.” He said. I curtsied to Thomas and followed my uncle. We entered a tall room. There were two staircases leading to a big ledge. The ledge had a white railing. The floors shined and in the middle of the room was a brown table with a pot of roses and some books. I smiled at the welcoming house. It was cozy and warm. He walked deeper into the house. I followed him. “This is the dining room.” He said. He went to the left. “The kitchen.” He said. Then he came to a door. “The back door.” He said. We exited both rooms and went to the right. “This is the library and the bathroom.” He said. He went deeper. “This is the parlor.” He said. He turn to the right of the parlor and entered a room. “Your room.” He said. I stared around. The room was green and there was a view of the bayou. There was a swimming pool and a row boat but the back yard was disgusting. I could see the maze which apparently did have leaves on them. I could see animals out of the barn and I could see maids on the porch talking and having their lunch. A maid came in with my bags and set them on my bed and then left and brought tea in. I generally took some and began having tea with my Uncle. “Upstairs is the other rooms. Such as school and more bedrooms, including mine. The maids bedrooms are in the attic so if you need anything in the night just go up there.” He said. I nodded and took another sip of my tea. “You remind me of your mother.” He said. “Do you happen to have a picture of my mother and father together?” I asked. He paused. “In fact I do.” He said. He stood up. “You can unpack later, I will show you to my office.” He said. I stood up and put my tea on the window sill and followed him. We came to the library and turned to the right and entered a large room with books and a desk with some feathers and extra ink bottles. There were glasses and there were photo albums. He took one photo album down that said 1655-1659 on the side and began flipping the pages. I looked at the wall. There was the Mona Lisa painting done a few years ago. “Ah here!” he said. I turned my attention pack to him. He took out a picture of a woman. She was wearing her wedding gown. She had glossy lips and her hair was black by the picture. She was smiling. “That’s your mother.” Said my uncle. He pointed to a man. Who I knew instantly. It was my papa. He had a brown mustache and beard and he was not bald. He had his arm around my mother. They were both smiling. But I did not see me. “Where am I?” I asked. “Grace, this is when your parents just married.” Said my uncle. He handed me the picture and closed the album and put it away. “Lunch will be served shortly.” Said my uncle. He stood up and led me out of his office. He closed the door and locked it. There was no going back in there without him. He left me in the library and I went to bedroom. The bed had a roof. It was blue and my covers were green with white pillows. On the wall was a drawing of a flower pot and a maple tree. The window sill pillows were green and blue and my rug was green. To the left of my room was my dresser. To the other side my bookshelf. I picked my packages up and set them on my bed. I opened them and took out my clothes and sorted them. I folded them and put my pajamas, underwear, shoes, shorts, and bathing suits into my dresser drawers. The rest of my clothes; skirts and shirts and dresses were put away into my closet. I slid that bag under my bed and opened the next one. I order my books in ABC order on my bookshelf and put my little horse on the dresser where I put my doll; Miranda. She was special to me because my mother had given it to me when I was little. I sat back on the window sill after putting my bags under my bed and took my tea and began sipping it. The sun was going down. The maids had left the porch. I put my tea down and when I looked up all I saw was the ugly grounds and the animals eating from their treys. The backyard was empty and lifeless. And I wanted to do something about it.
Chapter Two: Lily
I walked downstairs where my Uncle sat at the table. He was talking with Meg the governess who hadn’t greeted me at the door but yelled at me. I sat close to my Uncle. The maids came in and served us potato soup with some tea. I sipped some of my tea and put it down. “Uncle, when was the last time you cleaned the yards?” I asked. My Uncle put his tea down. “The last time your parents visited Grace.” He said. “When was that?” I asked. “When they married.” He said. “Oh.” I said. “Why?” he asked. I took a bite of soup. I swallowed it. “I was just wondering if we can make it have grass again.” I said. I stirred my soup around. “Child! Don’t play with your food!” said Meg. I was mad already with that girl. I stopped stirring my soup and sipped some of my tea. “Well we do have the money and all.” Said my Uncle. “I suppose we could get some people out there.” He said. I smiled. “Thank you Uncle.” I said. We all ate silence after that. “May I be excused?” I had made it louder again. “Go ahead.” Said my Uncle. A maid came in. Her hair was red and she was no older than ten. She wore a black dress and a black hat. She had bags under her eyes and she wore grey plade shoes. I scooted out and pushed my chair behind me and entered the library. The library was beautiful. There was fireplace and two armchairs beside it. There was my great-great-great grandfather’s clock and there was a brown, red, and orange rug. There were books and there were chairs and tables. There was picture of my Uncle and my aunt, who had died. I was alone and was the only child there. I took the book War and Peace and sat down on the arm chair to the right. I turned on the lamp and opened the book to chapter one and began reading.
The clock chimed 8:00 at night. I turned the page corner down and closed the door and stood up. I was tired. I looked at the window. It was dark and it was raining. Pouring, to be exact. I started hearing crying from up above. I slowly walked up the staircase and came to the fifth door to the right. I opened the door slowly. A little girl, no older than five was crying on her bed. She had blond hair and was wearing a green dress. She looked up and threw a pillow at me. “NO! Go away! I didn’t kill you! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” she screamed. I put my hands in front of me. “Why are you throwing pillows at me.” I said. She stopped. “Who are you?” she asked. “My name is Grace. Who are you?” I asked. “Lily. I’m sorry that I threw pillows at you just you reminded me of somebody I once knew.” She said. “Who was that then?” I asked. The wind whistled and I sat beside her. She looked around and whispered; Martha. “Who’s Martha?” I asked. “My sister.” She said. I looked around her room. Her room was pink and above the fireplace was a picture of her and an older girl. “That’s my sister.” Said Lily. She had noticed me gazing. I looked at her and back at the picture. “Martha looks like me.” I said. “She’s your cousin.” Said Lily. “Oh.” I said. The clock chimed 8:30. “I got to go.” I said. It was chiming and I could hear footsteps. “Hide under my bed!” said Lily. “Who is it?” I asked. “Meg! The governess! Now hide!” said Lily. I climbed under her bed which was dusty. The door opened and the steps came to the bed. “Goodnight Lily.” Said Meg. “Go away! I hate you!” said Lily. She threw another pillow and I saw it hit the ground. “Fine then.” She said. She kicked the pillow towards me and I backed up so it wouldn’t hit me. Meg closed the door and left the room and I heard her bedroom door clink. Lily lifted her bed cover up. “All clear.” She said. I climbed out from under the bed. I stretched. “I’ll see you tomommrow Lily.” I said. “Bye.” She said. I walked downstairs and heard steps behind me. I turned. “Meg?” I asked. No answer. I ran downstairs and closed my door behind me. I took off my dress and put on my nightgown and climbed into bed. I didn’t know what had come over me but I had a feeling that somebody was watching me.
Chapter Three: Bradley
I woke up by the scrapping over Nellie; one of the house maids cleaning my fire place. She stood up. “Sorry to wake you miss. The fire needed tending.” She said. “It’s alright.” I said. I rubbed my eyes. “I was having a bad dream anyways.” I said. I removed my knuckles from my eyes. Nellie was gone. The fire was still going. I shrugged and climbed out of bed and made my bed. I propped my pillows on top of my covers. I took off my nightgown and put on my brown dress with white lines on it and put it on with brown boots. I brushed my hair and walked out of my room. I heard clinking and I entered the kitchen. My Uncle was there. But the governess had just closed the door. “Morning Grace.” Said my Uncle. “Morning Uncle.” I said. I sat down at the table. “Sleep well?” he asked. “Oh yes.” I said. “Good.” He said. “I hired men to tend to the yards.” He said. He took a bite of pancakes. “Uncle? Could I plant…. Flowers?” I asked. “Go ahead.” He said. “Thank you!” I said. He handed me twenty-five cents. “Go one girl.” He said. I stood up and kissed his cheek and came to the door. “Where are you going?” asked Thomas. “To the shop.” I said. He handed me a basket. “You will need this then.” He said. I smiled and took the basket. He opened the door and I stepped out he closed the door behind me. My Uncle had not lied. Men were outside pulling weeds out. I stepped down the steps and walked to the gate. The same boy was there. He had brown hair and freckles. He also had hazel eyes. He wore jeans and plaid shirt. “Hi.” He said. “Hi.” I said. I opened the gate and closed it. “My name’s Bradley.” He said. He hopped over the fence. “Where are you going?” he asked. I crossed to the other side  of the street. He followed me. “To get flower seeds.” I said. “I can lead you there.” He said. “Ok.” I said. I followed him to town. “How long you have you lived here?” he asked. “Since yesterday.” I said. “Oh, you will get used to it.” He said. “I forgot to tell you my name.” I said. “It’s Grace.” “Pretty name.” he said. “Thank you.” I said. We came to town. Where two men ran by. He led me to a shop where a woman was holding out flowers. “Hello.” I said. She turned to me. “Do you want to buy flowers?” she asked. “Yes,  I want tulips, all kinds of roses and some sun flower seeds.” I said. “And also some watermelon, grapes, green beans and weed seeds.” I said. She handed me all the seeds and I payed for them. “Thank you for leading me.” I said. We were heading back. “It was a pleasure.” He said. He opened the garden gate for me. “Bye.” I said. “Bye.” He said. He hopped over his fence and ran to his house. I closed the gate behind me and pulled my hair behind my ear. I turned to the house. The windows were no longer dusty, the vines had been removed and they were painting the house a lovely white. The weeds had been removed and they were putting the new grass in. There were no weeds or vines. The barn was being painted red and white and the fences were now painted white. There was once again water in the fountain. I walked inside and sat my basket down on the front table. My Uncle was in his office writing. I knocked on the door. He looked up and took his reading glasses off. “Grace, come in.” he said. I walked in and closed the door behind me and sat on the couch. “What is it that brings you here?” he asked. “I was wondering… who is Martha?” I asked. “Martha, was my daughter. The oldest actually. She was sweet thing but she turned evil. One day she was torturing her little sister-“ he began. “Lily.” I said. He looked at me. “How did you know that?” he asked. “We met last night.” I said. “Oh.” He said. “Well they were in the maze and when Lily came inside she told me the maze had caught on fire. When we went out we burned the maze and we found Martha. She had caught on fire. We buried her in the courtyard.” He said. “And what about Aunt Elizabeth?” I asked. “She died of the flu. We buried her next to Martha.” Said my Uncle. “I’m sorry.” I said. “I sometimes think Lily blames herself for her mother’s and sister’s death.” He said. “Poor child.” He said. He put his glasses back on and went back to writing. I stood up and left the office. I grabbed my basket and some gloves. I put some gloves on and walked outside. I came to the front of the house and planted flowers in the front. In the back I ordered the men to make a large rectangle and they did so. I planted the rest of my seeds there. I turned to looked at the attic window. A girl that looked like Martha closed the window. I looked at Lily’s window. She was staring at me. I waved she waved back. She looked away and screamed. Darkness covered her.
Chapter Four: Martha
I dropped the shovel and ran inside. “Dear child! What is wrong with you?” asked my Uncle. I passed him and ran up the staircases to Lily’s room. Everything was torn up. I ran outside and ran to Bradley’s house. I knocked on the door. “Bradley!” I screamed. Bradley opened the door. “You need to help me!” I said. We ran to the fence he jumped over and helped me over. We ran to the house. “So your cousin; Lily was kidnapped by darkness?” he asked. “Yes, I know sounds weird but it is true!” I said. We ran upstairs to the attic. The maids had left the room and the beds were made. Lily was passed out on Nellie’s bed. I kneeled down beside her. “Lily.” I whispered. I sat on the bed and picked her up and put her on my lap. Bradley sat in front of me. “Lily.” I whispered. I held her up close to me. “I’m so sorry.” I said. Bradley somehow put a shield in front and something hit it. He removed the shield. A girl stood there. “Let’s play a game!” she said. She disappeared. “Try and find me!” she said. Bradley slashed the air. “Leave us alone!” He said. Martha appeared beside him. “Don’t you remember me Bradley?” she said. She kissed his cheek. He slayed at her. “Leave us alone Martha!” he said. He turned around and around. Lily woke up and screamed. We crashed to the ground. Bradley held his sword above us and we ducked our heads and screamed. That’s when Uncle and Meg opened the door. “Lily! Grace!” he said. He made us stand up. “You tried to murder them!” said Meg. “No!” said Bradley. He dropped his sword. “He was helping us!” I screamed at Meg. “Then why was he trying to kill you?” she asked. I looked at him. “Because he wanted to.” I said. He smiled and smiled back. “Grace, walk this boy home.” Said my Uncle. Bradley followed me downstairs and we went to the gate. He climbed over the fence. “Thank you Bradley.” I said. I kissed his cheek. He got red. “You’re welcome.” He said. I smiled. “Bye.” He said. “Bye.” I said. He walked home. Then he ran back. “I’m going on a trip. But I will write to you.” He said. We hugged and then he went home. I walked back to the house and sat in the library and began reading War and Peace. It was obvious Bradley and me were dating.
Chapter Five: Martha is put back to the dead
I was fifteen. It was April and I was harvesting my watermelons. Martha had not been seen. I heard some drive up. I walked up front. A truck pulled up. “Bradley!” I said. I opened the gate and closed it and ran after the truck. It stopped in front of the old house. Bradley got out. “Bradley!” I said. I hugged him. We walked back to my house. “What was that?” I asked. We looked around. I looked up at the house. Lily ran downstairs. She was eight now and her blond hair was longer. She was a blue dress. She ran outside. Martha ran after her. “No!” I said. We ran after Martha. Bradley tackled Martha. Lily and I ran inside. I took a knife out of the kitchen and ran outside. “No! Let me go you fool!” said Martha. I ran to Martha. He let Martha go and she pushed me to the ground. I dropped the knife. I grabbed Martha’s head and slammed it to the ground. I took my sash and wrapped it around her. She stood still. “Let me go!” she said. “No!” we said. Bradley cut off her head. She moved motionless. Her ghost body faded away.
It was a few weeks before we got front page of the newspaper.
Two Kids Kill Ghost Again?
Friday
On Friday, two teenagers killed a ghost by the name of Martha Bicket. Martha had died six years before World War 1. And in two houses she appeared but in the front yard of Grace Bicket’s house they killed her. Her father said she died in front of the maze. And now they never see her.
I hugged Bradley and we looked at Martha’s grave. “It’s best you stay here Martha.” I said. “Yeah.” Said Bradley. He put his arm around my waste. And we walked back to my house. We left Martha alone in her grave.
