Chapter One: Auditions
“Allie now remember no flirts.” Said Mr. Johnson. Allie turned to her father. “Father, I know.” And then she left to the only school in town. It was a small town and now Allie’s father was the governor. Allie’s mother was the town mayor which caused Allie to be very new to the town and nobody knew her yet. Today Allie wore a knitted dress made by her mother. It was a blue dress and it was tied with a white bow. Allie had her brown hair curled [as always], and a white bow in her hair. She wore white tights too. She also wore some black shoes in which she had gotten from her sister, Martha who was now traveling the world with her horse, Petticoat, her husband, William Franklin, and her two daughters; seven year old Mary, and five year Katherine. Allie held two books; one her scavenger journal and the other a science book which she used to study the sky and world as she traveled. Allie’s family was always on the go and even Allie’s oldest brother, Tim wrote to the family with his twelve year old son, Mitchel, his seven year old son, Thomas, and his only daughter, five year old, Marie. “Poor Marie.” Said Allie as she entered the building. Inside the building there were people inside a gym and Allie entered it. “Ok, Allie Johnson?” asked a man. “Here!” said Allie. Everybody watched Allie set her books down and then started whispering when they saw the titles; My Space and World Journal, and My Scavenger Journal. Even the man was quiet curious because most children never carried around such things. “Allie Parker, what are those?” he asked. Allie looked at the books. “My scavenger and Space and World Journal.” I said. Everybody started laughing. Allie felt a sudden blush. “Let me those.” Said the man. Allie took the books from the floor and handed them to the man. The man flipped through them seeing many words in perfect cursive, pictures of animals, plants, and flowers. He was very impressed with the solar system. “Allie, how old was you when you got these?” asked the man. “Five sir.” Said Allie. Everybody laughed. “Allie, you are very talented. I hope you can attend the play. Now time for your audition.” Said the man. Allie set the books down and walked on stage. “Who are you auditioning for?” asked the man. “Um Emily Simpson.” Said Allie. “Ok, begin.” Said the man. Allie acted with swiftness. When the music began Allie twirled for a little while, stopped, and began singing. Everybody was taken away by her voice. She sang graceful and took her time. The man was indeed impressed and thought, She’s in. Suddenly Allie was done and everybody applause. “Great! You got the act!” said the man. Allie smiled, curtsied and took her books. When she left she saw a guy and he walked over. “Hello sweet cheeks.” He said. “Um sorry, I’m not allowed to flirt.” Said Allie. She turned and started to walk holding her books in her arms. “So, um the name is Kyle.” He said. “Yes Kyle I understand Kyle. Now will you please let me leave?” asked Allie. “Whoa, what’s the hurry?” asked Kyle. “I’m not allowed to flirt.” Said Allie. “We’re not flirting, we’re just talking love.” He said. Allie walked away fast. When he blocked her again there was a deep voice,
“What are you doing with my sister?” Kyle turned around to revel a tall man. He had a brown beard and he was standing by two boys, a young girl, and a blond headed woman. “Tim!” said Allie. She ran and hugged her brother. “Uh… just talkin’.” Said Kyle. “Does my father know you?” asked Tim. “Who’s the father?” asked Kyle. “Get off before I take out my gun.” Said Tim. Kyle scampered off. “Thanks Tim.” Said Allie. “Hello Allie.” Said Tim’s wife, Alice. “Hello Alice.” Said Allie, shaking her hand. “Aunt Allie!” said Marie. Marie ran over and hugged Allie. “Hi Marie, Thomas, Mitchel.” Said Allie. The boys waved. “We’re staying’ at Papa’s place. Know where it is?” asked Tim. “I know where I live Tim.” Said Allie. So Allie lead Tim, Alice, Marie, Mitchel, and Thomas to her house. When Tim entered Mr. Johnson turned around. “Tim! Alice!” said Mr. Johnson. “Grandma! Grandpa!” shouted Marie, and Thomas. Mitchel just stood there. Marie and Thomas ran over to Mrs. Johnson and hugged her. “Hello Marie, Thomas!” she looked up. “Mitchel come over here!” she said. Mitchel walked over. “Oh you’re growing to look just like your Papa!” she said. Mitchel shrugged. “Parker thing I guess.” He said. Suddenly Allie remembered something. “Oh Mama! Papa! You won’t believe what happened!” said Allie. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson turned to Allie. “I got the part! I got the part as Emily!” said Allie. “Yes, yes very charming now um… Tim how old are you turnin’ this summer?” asked Mr. Johnson. “Well twenty-five Papa, I heard that Martha’s turning twenty-five. Didn’t realize it but she was born in the same year as me.” Said Tim. “Ahh, yes Martha was born ten months after ya. Ha, fine farm girl she was. We are installin’ a farm in the back and I was wantin’ know if you could round up some of those buds of your’s back in Townsville we could build ourself a farm. Every town need a farm you know.” Said Mr. Johnson. “Aye Papa, hey you mind if we crash her a couple weeks? Our house being fixed up.” Said Tim. “Oh Timothy! Oh do tell what happened! It must be dreadful!” said Mrs. Johnson. “Well see Ma, Alice and I were tuckin’ in the wee ones and then a stampede came of buffalos. We were covered lucky enough. And Mitchel was smart enough to build us a here basement!” said Tim. “Aye, he is a smart one. Very wise like the wise men.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Mitchel now was the center of attention. Allie sat down on the floor and took her needle point and listened to them chattering. “Mitchel how old you turning this August eh?” asked Mr. Johnson. “Thirteen Grandpa. I suppose Papa take me fishin’. We usually don’t get much of a father-son time. I mean with Papa’s tight schedule I don’t think anything can happen!” said Mitchel. “Aye, you get a day sooner or later bud. I can assure you you’ll get a day before you turn fifteen! A young lad you be then. Then your Papa will let you go down to the creek. Maybe meet some young ladies.” Said Mr. Johnson. “Oh I’m not sure I’ll allow Mr. Mitchel down there anytime soon.” Said Alice. “Aye yep, I remember. See a few weeks ago Alice and I were talkin’ and Mitchel was throwin fit because we weren’t listen to him. So he killed one of the neighbor’s cows and we’ll we now owe some money. We can’t give them any until that house is fixed.” Said Tim. “Well you’re welcome to crash here Tim! It’s a pleasure to have you!” said Mrs. Johnson. “Thanks Ma. Pa, I’ll round up some of my friends. I mean it won’t be hard buildin’ that here farm here with some friends.” Said Tim. Mr. Johnson nodded. When the men went outside and Mrs. Johnson was talking with Alice Marie came over and sat by Allie. “What are you making?” asked Marie. “A needlepoint.” Said Allie. She finished her ‘E’ in Believe. “Does Papa know about the pig Mitch killed?” asked Marie. “He killed a pig?” asked Allie, setting the needle down. “Yeah when Papa and Mama was talkin’ with the town mayor Mitch went over to the farm and killed one of the pigs then dragged it out to the woods. Told us not to tell… oh no.” said Marie. “Marie I’m sorry, I can’t keep a secret like that from my Papa especially from your Papa.” Said Allie. She walked outside. “Oh Allie please don’t tell! If you do Mitch he’ll get Thunder and Lightning on me!” said Marie. “I’m sorry Marie, I’ll tell him I overheard him mumblin’ I could tell he was talking about a nearby pig.” Said Allie. She walked over to Tim. “Hey Tim, I overheard Mitch talking about a pig he killed. I heard he killed it when you were talking to the man and he killed the pig and dragged it to the woods. He also threatened he get Thunder and Lightning on little Marie.” Said Allie. “Aye, that boy… I’m going to go teach him some lessons.” Said Tim, cracking his fist he walked inside. Suddenly they heard screaming, and popping and yelling. “Is Mitch get hurt?” asked Thomas coming out of the house. Mitchel ran outside, holding is butt. Tim came out. “Oh Tim! You musn’t do that to Mitch, you know he’s got anger issues!” said Allie. “I can’t help Allie! A boy’s got to learn what a boys got to learn!” said Tim. Mitchel didn’t speak the rest of the day.
“What are you doing with my sister?” Kyle turned around to revel a tall man. He had a brown beard and he was standing by two boys, a young girl, and a blond headed woman. “Tim!” said Allie. Chapter Two: A big Christmas Surprise
“Get up Allie!” said Marie, jumping on Allie’s bed. Allie opened her eyes to see her niece standing above her, hands on her hips. But something was different the room was different! Allie sat up and looked around. Instead of an old wood cabin she was in a stone house! The ceiling was high and there was a nice fire! There was bookshelf and a brown chest in front of Allie’s bed. NEW BED! Allie admired her silky covers. There were green. She turned to the pillows; white! “I feel like a little princess!” said Allie looking around. There was bookshelf in the corner of the room stacked with books. There was a dresser and a rug that was made of sheep fur! Allie ran over to the chest. “Oh I hope new clothes!” said Allie. She flipped it open and indeed there was new clothes. There were also made of silk. “Santa! Thank you Santa!” said Allie. She took out a green dress. It had black where the top separated from the waist! Allie placed it on and took green shoes. She put it on and took a green bow and turned. “A MIRROR!” said Allie. She ran over to admire the big mirror. She styled her hair and put the bow in. “Oh Marie! This is a wonderful surprise!” said Allie, twirling. Marie looked sad though. “What’s wrong?” asked Allie. “I got junk.” Said Marie. Allie sat down beside her and saw what she was calling junk; a big old fat ragdoll stood in her stocking. Allie walked over to her stocking and took a china doll. “Here Marie… I don’t like dolls that much.” Lied Allie. Marie took it and hugged it tight. “Thank you Aunt Allie!” said Marie. “Now come on!” said Allie. They ran into the next room were everybody was laughing and clapping and running around. Mr. Johnson turned to Allie. “Allie it’s a miracle!” he said. Mrs. Johnson ran over and hugged Allie. “Oh my gosh!” said Mrs. Johnson. Everybody walked into Allie’s bedroom. “Man, Allie you got a jackpot.” Said Tim. Allie giggled. Marie went over to Alice and Alice lifted her. “Well today’s the day that barn is starting to be build’t! Let’s go!” said Mr. Johnson. “Tis this a swift one.” Laughed Tim as Mitchel ran out the door quickly. Mrs. Johnson looked at Alice and Allie. “Alice, and Allie, you both go down to the bank and catch us some here fish.” She said. Alice and Allie grabbed a net and ran and got a coat on and then went to the bank. The bank was frozen and Allie wiped away some wet ice. There under the wet ice were fish frozen. “Alice I found some!” said Allie. Alice ran over. “Great Allie!” she said. Allie and Alice grabbed rocks and threw them at the ice until it cracked. Alice and Allie then threw their nets in and dragged in tons of fish. Then they wrapped their nets up and walked home. Marie and Mrs. Johnson sat in front of a fire. Mrs. Johnson was talking with Marie and Marie was staring at Mrs. Johnson. “Suddenly Grandpa ran up and grabbed the wolf and the wolf howled and ran away so quick it was a bolt of lightning.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “Wow.” Said Marie. “Oh Ma, don’t tell fibs. You know that if you run as fast or more fast then light then you disasspeared.” Said Allie. “We got the fish.” Alice changed the subject. “Great, Allie dear go get us that kettle… It’s in my room I believe.” She said. Allie nodded and walked to their room. The room was beautiful; white covers with green pillows and a black bed. There was a chest and it had green straps. Allie grabbed the new kettle that was silver and ran back in. “Go get some water.” Said her mother. Allie took a vase and ran back to the pond and dipped in some water. “Hello.” Said Kyle. “Merry Christmas.” Said Allie. “Ok, ok. I know our first meeting wasn’t so good but hey I can be a good boy.” He said. “Hmph, well my papa doesn’t allow me to date.” Said Allie. “Keep a secret from him! He’s trying to make you afraid of your own shadow.” Allie started walk towards home. “No he isn’t, my papa knows what’s best.” Said Allie. “Uh huh… well moonlight picnic?” asked Kyle. “I’m sorry Kyle, I just can’t disobey my papa.” Said Allie. “Fine then you’ll see!” said Kyle. Allie entered her gate and Tim took out his gun. Kyle dropped the bucket he’d been holding and ran away. “Tim…” said Allie. Tim dropped his gun. “Go on, Al. I don’t want no boy near you anytime soon.” Said Tim. “Tim don’t you think Papa’s tryin’ to make me a afraidy cat?” asked Allie. “Allie I wouldn’t believe that even if I slipped under some ice.” He said. Tim chopped some wood and smoothed the plank. “Well Tim… Kyle thinks Papa’s tryin to do that… and I don’t know… What if he is?” asked Allie. Tim stopped smoothing. “Allie I know I’m a boy but if I know anything I know that we men are trouble for young gals. Alice and I had dying love… almost ended up dead.” He said. “Like Romeo and Juliet?” asked Allie. “Yes like Knomeo and Julie something.” He said. “Tim you such back slapper.” Laughed Allie. Tim snickered. “Yeah,” he spit. “Well I’ll see some laughin face when Papa get his hands on you.” He said. “Be careful now, never can tell when Paps will see you talkin with that good for nothing maniac.” He said. “Kyle’s not a maniac, he’s tryin to find a girl before he leave.” Said Allie. “Go on in Allie, I have no time for chit chattin, I have work to do.” Allie shrugged and walked inside. Then she filled the kettle and hung it above the fire. “Now Allie, do be a dear and go cut up some chicken for mama.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie began cutting the chicken and then she hung it above the fire also. When the chicken was done Alice took the chicken, and slid it onto a plate. Allie took the kettle and poured some tea. “Here we go.” Said Allie. The girls raised their cups. “To Jesus.” They all said and drank some tea.
Chapter Three: Sneaky Kyle
It was right after school that Allie discovered a new calf had been born. It was a happy day and Allie raced home. There she dropped her school books and ran out back. “Mr. Pea.” Said Allie. Allie’s next door neighbor turned. “Oh well if it ain’t Miss old Allie. What can I do for ya cowgirl?” he asked. “I want see the calf.” Said Allie. “Well I don’t have the calf no more. I sold it to your folks today.” He said. “Really?” asked Allie. “Yeah Allie, Spring acoming and your folks don’t have more then a egg in that hen house.” Said Mr. Pea. “Thank you Mr. Pea.” Said Allie. She ran to the barn where she found a light brown cow and calf. “Oh Bella!” said Allie. “Mr. Pea gave you to us too?” asked Allie. Bella just chewed some straw. “Oh the little calf so cute!” said Allie. Bella stopped chewing then swallowed. “Oh Papa!” said Allie. She ran into the house. “Allie shush it! Your Papa ain’t feeling his days right now.” said Mrs. Johnson. Allie looked into their room. Mr. Johnson sat on his bed. He really didn’t look good. His face was red and he was snoring. “Poor Papa…” whispered Allie. “Robber!” shouted Mr. Johnson and he sat up and held up his gun. Allie screamed. “Oh Allie, just you.” He said. Allie kept breathing. “Papa, you never told me about the cow and the calf from Mr. Pea.” Said Allie. “Oh Allie I didn’t even know you were home… now please I need… some rest.” He yawned and laid down. Allie nodded then left the room. Mrs. Johnson was standing by the fire tending to the dinner; chicken. “Ma, what’s Pa going to do? I mean we only have a cow and calf… hopefully Pa will get some chickens?” asked Allie. “Yes, yes… now Allie go get Betsy and Justin… they need to be in the barn. It’s going to be raining tonight. Also get some extra hay for the animals. Make sure you also put up the shovel, axe, and wretch. We don’t want them to rust.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie nodded then went out front. The two horses; Betsy and Justin were chewing on some grass. “Come on Betsy. Come on Justin.” The horses were torn apart from their beloved grass and then led through the gate, through the doors, and into their stables. Allie took the pitchfork and put more hay in all their trays and then she went outside and brought the tools in. Then she ran inside as a slightest drop of rain fell. “Ma, I’m done.” Said Allie. “Yes… yes.” Said Mrs. Johnson. She slid the chicken on the biggest plate they had. “Now… I need you to clean your room.” She said. Allie gulped then walked into her room. It was messy! She had played in it a lot since she got her new bedroom design. Allie started by clearing books off her bed and then she took the quill and ink bottle, placed it on her side table and then brought the blankets up. There she stuffed the sides under the bed rack and then she fluffed the pillows. Then she took her old stinky rag doll and placed it on her bed. Then she opened the shutters and looked outside. It was raining and she could see people running for shelter in town. Allie giggled then she turned and gathered up her dirty clothes and placed them in the old bucket. Then she took it outside and set it outside and then walked back in. Then she took her clean clothes and put them away in her chest and then she picked up books and placed them on the bookshelf. She took her bows and placed them in her chest also. When she was done she walked outside. “Done.” Said Allie. Mrs. Johnson was in her room with Mr. Johnson. “Allie do you mind doing the dishes and putting them away? Your pa has a fever.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “No I don’t.” lied Allie. She wanted to play. She walked into the kitchen and began washing the dishes. She then wiped them clean and dry with a rag and stacked them. This pattern went on; wash, wash, scrub, scrub, wash, wash, scrub, scrub then she dried and dried all those dishes, stacked them and then put them away in the cupboards. When she was done she walked to Mrs. Johnson. “Done.” Said Allie. “Thank you Allie dear. That’s all I need…” she said. Allie nodded then walked to her room and looked outside. She could see Kyle but he wasn’t running for shelter…. He was running and sneaking into the woods!
Chapter Four: Indians
“I’ll be back!” shouted Allie, taking an umbrella. Allie opened her umbrella and then went outside. Then she ran to the woods. Kyle was running under the trees. Allie followed him. She then stepped on a twig which cracked. Kyle turned and Allie hid behind a bush. When she looked he was walking again. Allie followed him till he came to a camp. “Queer… never seen this place before.” Allie said. When he walked closer in two men walked to him and started to talk to him. “Indians…” whispered Allie. Suddenly they started talking and laughing! “Savages…” said Allie. Then they turned and started to walk…
They were walking for Allie!
Allie screamed and they ran. “Oh so isn’t it Miss Allie Parker?” asked Kyle. Allie said, “Why are you here?” “Because they raised me!” said Kyle. Allie froze. “They raised you?” asked Allie. “Yeah, wipeout!” said Kyle. Allie was scared this time. “B-but why are you at town?” asked Allie. “Because, they are scared hunters, like your dad and brother, will come kill me and them.” Said Kyle. “Papa and Tim are not hunters! They hunt for our food. Like animals and fish.” Said Allie. “Yeah we’re animals in your kind. But in our’s ya’ll are the animals.” Said Kyle. “You’re a fake! No wonder you wanted to date me all this time! For my parents to think I’m a savage and kill me!” said Allie. “Nope.” Said Kyle. “Why then?” asked Allie. Kyle looked at the Indians who were standing there then back at Allie. “Because I love you.” He said. “Kyle… you’re a sweet boy I can tell but I already told you; I’m not allowed to date.” It was pouring. “Then why did you follow me here?!” he yelled through the thunder. “Because…. Because I was scared. I cared about you! And you kept a secret from me!” said Allie. She turned and ran out of the woods. “Allie!” shouted Mrs. Johnson. Allie ran towards her home. “Allie!” said Mrs. Johnson. She brought Allie inside.
Allie sat in her bed with a cold that night. “Achoo!” said Allie. “Cold… and a fever.” Said Mrs. Johnson, feeling Allie’s forehead. “Pitty.” She said. She took a warm rag and placed it on Allie’s head. “Mama… where’s that famous girl at right now?” asked Allie. “Laura?’ asked Mrs. Johnson. Allie nodded then sneezed again. “Well she’s somewhere in Kentucky with Mary and Carrie. And her Ma, Caroline, and her pa, Charles. She’s happy right now.” she said. She then left the room and brought chicken in to Allie. “T-t-t-ACHOO!” said Allie. “Thank y-y-you ACHOO!” said Allie. “Get some rest after eating.” Said her mother and she opened the shutters. “You need some heat in this room.” She said. Allie nodded and took her rag doll. “Why did Tim leave so early?” asked Allie. “Well his house was fixed up Allie dear.” She said. Allie nodded and Mrs. Johnson blew out the candle and left the room.
The next morning Allie awoke feeling much, much better. She dressed in a red gown with black shoes and brushed her hair. Then she went out to the barn and brought the horses, the cow, and the calf out and the horses galloped around. When Allie was emptying Bella’s stall she heard a neigh. “That doesn’t sound too much like Betsy or Justin.” Said Allie. She walked to Betsy’s stall. Laying on the ground was a light coated brown horse with a blondish mane. “A foal!” said Allie. She placed her hands on her hips. “Spring time is filled with a lot of life!” said Allie. She took the foal and led it outside. The foal galloped towards Betsy. Allie walked to Betsy. “That a girl…” said Allie, patting Betsy’s back. Betsy neighed. Suddenly Allie heard tons of noise and a wagon. Allie turned to see Mr. Johnson rolling down the hill with his wagon and a new horse! She could hear animals. She could hear oinks, quacks, clucks, baas, and she could hear a bull but it wouldn’t fit in the wagon! When it came to space a bull was coming behind the wagon. “Papa!” said Allie. She ran to the gate and waved. “Hello Allie! Come help me with these animals!” said Mr. Johnson, pulling into their property. “Papa, you went to the market.” Said Allie, coming to the wagon. “Yes, I did Allie. Now open the gates for me.” Said Mr. Johnson, wrapping the rope off the bull. Allie ran over to the gates and pushed them wide and Mr. Johnson brought the bull in. The bull, when it was let go of, went over to Bella. Then Allie walked to the wagon and grabbed some chickens and brought them past the gates to the henhouse where they ran over and began pecking at the ground. “Allie, look in the back… I think I have some chicken food in there. We also need some pig food.” Said Mr. Johnson. Allie climbed in the back to see a little puppy. “Daddy, you got us a dog?” yelled Allie. “Yes, but not any kind of dog but a herding dog… It’s a gal.” he said. Allie picked up the puppy and tossed the food to Mr. Johnson. “Thank you Papa!” she said. She ran into the gate and placed the puppy down. Then she brought the sheep out. “One, two, three, four, five, six! Six sheep papa!” said Allie. Mr. Johnson nodded and led the pigs. “Seven pigs. And five ducks!” said Allie, counting as they all walked past. Then Allie picked up the dog and brought it into the field where the puppy started to run around. “Chaser…” said Allie. “Hey…Clever!” said Allie. “What?” asked Mr. Johnson. “Clever, that’s what I’m naming the pup.” Said Allie. “Are you now? Well go tell your ma that she’ll be bit a surprise when she discoverers these folks.” He said. Allie ran inside and said, “Mama! Mama come outside!” Mrs. Johnson sat up. “Allie please…” said Mrs. Johnson. She heard a baa right outside her window. And then she dressed into a green gown and white shoes and ran outside without bothering to brush her hair. “Hello Martha!” said Mr. Johnson. When Mrs. Johnson ran over to Mr. Johnson, Allie ran to the wagon and found packs of seeds. “Corn… eggplants…tomatoes…grapes….carrots…Ohh! Wheat, we can make bread!” said Allie. “Mama Look!” said Allie, bringing the seeds out. “Carrots? Eggplants? Oh Charles, you brought us some-“said Mrs. Johnson. “Seeds.” Said Mr. Johnson. “Well let’s not wait Allie go get the fielder!” said Mrs. Johnson. The fielder, which the Parker’s called, was the plower. Allie ran into the barn and took the fielder and brought it out. Mr. Johnson plowed the lawn with it and close behind came Allie and Mrs. Johnson planting seeds. Then they watered the plants and washed their hands. “Allie go get the bucket.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie ran and grabbed the bucket holding the water and clothes. Then Mrs. Johnson and Allie kneeled down and took a washboard and began scrubbing. They scrubbed then hung the clothes on the dry line. “Allie go make your bed.” She said. Allie ran into her room, made her bed, and then went back out. In the woods Allie saw Kyle. But he wasn’t dressed in the regular clothes he once was. He was dressed in deer shorts with no shirt on. He had his hair combed back and he wore no shoes. “Kyle!” said Allie. Mr. Johnson turned and saw Kyle, ran outside the gates and yelled, “INDIANS!”
Chapter Five: People vs. Indians
All the people in town ran out holding guns. Mr. Johnson ran inside, grabbed his gun and ran with the crowd towards the Indians. “No!’ said Allie. She started to run after the crowd. “No Allie!” said Mrs. Johnson. She grabbed Allie and brought her in. Allie ran to her room and opened her window and climbed out. Then she raced up the hill to the Indians camp. “Hurry! Run!” yelled Allie, waving her arms as she entered the Indian’s Camp. They turned to her and looked at her. Allie hesistated then pointed at them and acted like she was running and then she pointed away from her people. The Indians started to run and when Kyle came he looked around. “What did you do?” he yelled at her. “That way! Go that way!” said Allie. Suddenly her people watched Kyle run and then they followed. “No!” shouted Allie. She took a shortcut through the woods and ran to the Indians. All the people and Indians were fighting. “No stop! STOP!” Shouted Allie. “Everybody stopped fighting. “Allie stop it.” Said Mr. Johnson. “No Papa! The truth is…” said Allie. It was silent, all eyes on her. “The truth is… that…” she walked over to Kyle and put her arms around him and looked at Mr. Johnson. “The truth is I love one of these; Kyle.” She said. Everybody in her town gasped. Kyle looked at her and Allie at him. “Allie you’re not allowed to date you’re only five!” said Mr. Johnson. “No I’m not! I’m fourteen!” said Allie. Everybody was silent this time. Mr. Johnson looked at Allie. “I’m not used to watching my little girl grow up… but Allie… he’s an Indian.” He said. “So Papa? So? What’s the difference? They are people too! We have feelings; they have feelings! We have hearts; they have hearts!” said Allie. “If you killed one of them it would be like you killing another one.” Said Allie. Everybody was silent. “Allie please…” said Kyle. “No Kyle… I can’t let you die.” Said Allie. “Papa, please do this one thing…” said Allie. Everybody looked at Mr. Johnson. “For me?” asked Allie. “I think… I think I can make an exception.” Said Mr. Johnson. Allie and Kyle cheered. The Indians saw Kyle cheering and then the chief tapped Kyle. “Sea, Napa’ killsd.” Said Kyle. This time the Indians cheered. Allie hugged Mr. Johnson.
Chapter Six: The Play
After that moment everybody around the world came to see the play of a young girl’s heart that loved an Indian and made a difference. All Indians and people came and Allie even saw the most famous western girl; Laura. When it was fixing to end Allie came out; she was the main girl playing a girl named Sophia. When the music began she sang; “I loved you more then I can tell… there’s a heart that’s inside me that I can’t tell you more that I know. I’ve told you once and twice…that I wasn’t allowed to date other guys. And so took my breath away. And I rejected you when I was scared… and I told you I wasn’t allowed to date other guys. When my heart is too hard to explain. I just reject because I am scared to tell you why… so I told you I wasn’t allowed to date other guys. And told you I wasn’t allowed to date other guys. So I’m going to try. And one fateful afternoon, you were beside a tree watching my every move wondering why do not like me and so pointed to you. And everybody started to yell at you. So I ran into the woods….and I told your kind to run. And then you yelled at me and I pointed towards the directions your kind had run and then they after you. I told them to stop and then I told them I was in love and then everybody cheered and I remember the things that I said; “I’m not allowed to date other guys.” And that was the ending of our love story…” Everybody cheered and clapped. Allie curtsied and then she turned to Kyle and raised her arm and yelled; “TO ALL PEOPLE!”
Chapter Seven: Jenny
It was a few months later when the chickens were laying eggs, cows were having calves, and the only female pig had new piglets, and the horses were having foals when Jenny, Allie’s little sister was born. Then went over the whole entire town and Allie soon found herself doing a lot of things for her mother; dishes, laundry, raking, and harvesting. She even had to feed the chickens! She felt more like a maid then a daughter now but it felt good when Mrs. Johnson would lay little Jenny down for a nap and let Allie take a break. But as soon as Jenny woke up and cried it was back to work for Allie. When it came to cooking, Mrs. Johnson would give Allie Jenny and Allie would entertain Jenny while Mrs. Johnson worked and cooked. During this time, Mr. Johnson was at the Town Hall working and trying to a hire a young man to take care of the animals. It wasn’t he didn’t trust Mrs. Johnson and Allie it was just that Jenny was causing some trouble. “She’ll be a great farm girl Papa, I can assure you.” Said Allie one night. Mr. Johnson looked at Allie. “Allie, your mother’s exhausted, keep it down.” He said. “Exhausted? Taking care of little poor Jenny all day while I’m harvesting, feeding the animals, planting seeds, bathing Clever, making beds, cleaning horses, milking cows, painting the fence, raking, sending mail, doing dishes, and doing the laundry all in the sun and she’s exhausted?! How do you think I feel?” yelled Allie. “Allie, you best get your butt into that room of your’s before I go get the stick! That old stick may be fixin’ to break but that don’t matter!” So after dinner Allie went into her bedroom and read her Holy Bible. “Allie… tomommrow, your father’s taking a day off so he can see Jenny get baptized, and yes were are going to church.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie nodded and Mrs. Johnson took the bible and helped Allie into her nightgown and then she read Allie to sleep.
The next day everybody woke up and Allie dressed in her finest green dress with black shoes. She combed her hair and this time placed no bow in. When she walked out Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were already ready. Mr. Johnson wore his best tux and Mrs. Johnson a red dress. Jenny wore a long white dress and together they all walked to the only church in town. During the middle of church a little girl tapped her shoulder. Allie turned around. The little girl wore dirty clothes with black hair. She was kind of Chinese and then American. She was smiling. “Allie don’t stare at the orphan.” Whispered Mrs. Johnson. “Orphan?” asked Allie. “Yes Allie… Orphan.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “Couldn’t we adopt her? She must be what do you say; seven, eight?” asked Allie. “Allie no not until I get to know her more.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “Go to the orphanage then.” Said Allie. “I will when I find time.” Said Mrs. Johnson. After church I can lay Jenny down for a nap and you go the orphanage and when Jenny wakes up I’ll take care of her.” Said Allie. “You sure Allie?” asked Mrs. Johnson. “Postive!” said Allie.
After church, Mrs. Johnson was getting ready to leave. “Ok, goodbye Allie and Jenny.” She said. And then she left. Allie turned and laid Jenny down for a nap. When Jenny was asleep in her crib Allie turned and began doing the dishes and laundry. After the dishes were dry and put up Allie brought the laundry outside and hung it up. Then she walked inside where she gathered the other dirty clothes and then she placed them in a basket. She walked into her room and made her bed and then she made her parent’s bed. Then she walked outside to the barn. She brought the horses outside and washed the horses, brushed them, and dried them. She did the same to foals. She brought the horses to the field and she milked Bella. Then she let the cow, the calf, and the bull out. Then she harvested the eggs from the hen house, filled the troughs and threw chicken food on the ground. Then she began pulling weeds out of the garden. “Ha, you workin’ by yourself missy?” asked Mr. Pea. Allie turned. “Yes Mr. Pea, you startled me.” Said Allie. “Ha, I’m no threat, he he.” He said and then he went back to his farm work. Allie raked up the leaves and walked inside and laid on her bed. Then the door opened. Allie sat up and there stood Mrs. Johnson. And she was alone.
Chapter Eight: School
Five months after that church day Allie woke up not to herself but to Mrs. Johnson. “Today is your first day of school Allie.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “School?” grunted Allie. “Yes school Allie.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie got out of bed, stretched, then patted her mouth. “Mama, why?” asked Allie, she got off her bed and walked to her chest and opened it. “Because your old enough, besides I can’t be watching you also.” Said Mrs. Johnson. “You’re not.” Said Allie. She took out a red dress and looked at it. “Allie I know your old enough for school just-“ Allie placed the dress up and took out a green one. “Just you aren’t-“ Allie took off her pajamas and pulled on the dress. “Supposed to still be at home. You should be with the other-“ Allie brushed her hair and looked at Mrs. Johnson. “Kids. And plus your father has registered you to a nice-“ said Mrs. Johnson. Allie took some black shoes out of her chest and placed them on. “School…. It’s the only one in the town and it is the best instead of staying at home copying ABC’s and 123’s.” she said. “But I like copying my ABC’s and 123’s.” said Allie. “Also… this school can be a little strict but surely you won’t have problem with the stick.” She said. “Schools have sticks?” said Allie surprised. “Yes, also the teachers will love you. I mean everybody has seen you in that play and I’ve told a lot of the teachers about your brightness and how talented you really are.” She said. Allie walked into the kitchen and Mrs. Johnson followed. Allie took a pear and bit into it. “I like be smart.” She said through her pear. “Allie there’s also another thing you should know…” she said. She took a bag and placed a sandwhich, a pear, and a napkin inside. “They expect you not to talk with your mouth full.” She eyed Allie. “Oh Ma, you don’t think I’ll have a problem do you?” asked Allie. “No Allie now hurry along, you don’t want to be late.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Allie started to run and bumped into a girl. “Ow!” said the girl. “Oops, sorry…” Allie helped her up. “The name’s Allie.” Said Allie. The girl looked at her and smiled. “It’s alright it was an accident. I’m Elizabeth.” Said the girl. They shook hands. “Um your first day?” asked Allie. “Yep.” Said Elizabeth. They started walking to the school. “I heard there’s only five teachers… a math, science, English, Social Studies and then…” said Allie. “Principal… Principal Handy.” Said Elizabeth. Allie nodded and they came to the school and walked to the math teacher.
When school was over Allie and Elizabeth walked back and Elizabeth waved to Allie and walked down the street of Allie’s. Allie walked into her house and closed the door. “How was school?” asked Mrs. Johnson. Jenny was crawling around the place. “It was alright.” Said Allie, picking Jenny up as Clever ran by into Allie’s room. Allie looked at Jenny then placed her down. “You need me to do anything?” asked Allie, setting her books down. Mrs. Johnson turned, she was drying a plate with her apron. “Looks like you have some homework to do.” She said. “Yeah… some of the teachers are strict.” Said Allie, picking her books up again. “Allie when you are done with your homework will you please go let the horses and cows out… and also the chickens out of the henhouse.” She said. Allie nodded and went into her room. She studied, did her homework and was finally done. She walked outside her room and then outside the house to the barn. She opened the barn doors and let the horses and cows out and led them into the field. She climbed over the fence of the henhouse, opened the door then climbed back over. Then when she walked back in there laid Jenny asleep. There was a bark and Clever ran towards Jenny not paying attention to her. Allie ran and grabbed Jenny and Clever stepped right where Jenny had just been, leaving a big dusty paw print. “Stupid dog…” mumbled Allie. She calmed Jenny down and laid her down. Then she began scrubbing the floors. Mr. Johnson came in. “Allie you do know you don’t have to do this.” Said Mr. Johnson. Allie looked up, pulled hair out of her face, then said, “Pa, I know.” Then she began scrubbing. Mrs. Johnson looked at Allie from the dishes. “Allie I’m out to hang the laundry, make sure you bring Jenny outside when you exit the house.” Said Mrs. Johnson. Then Mr. and Mrs. Johnson walked outside, Mrs. Johnson holding a laundry basket. Allie began to wash the windows then she went into her room, gathered up dirty clothes and washed them. “I must make myself useful.” Thought Allie, standing up. “But… maybe I can make beds!” said Allie. Then she ran into her bedroom and took hold of the covers and brought them back and straightened them. Then she took her pillows, fluffed them up and then she dusted the window sill. Then she went into Mr. and Mrs. Johnson’s room, took the covers, pulled them back, smoothed the wrinkles, fluffed the pillows and then dusted the window sill. She walked into the front room where you would enter and washed Mr. Johnson’s medal for hunting. “Full bronze.” Said Mr. Johnson to Allie and Tim and Margret when they were all younger and in the same house. “Always has and always will. My most prized passion besides my children and wife.” But they all changed when Mr. Johnson’s best friend died. Sometimes Margret, Tim, and Allie would eavesdrop on him and hear him when he was going to bed, “It’s all my fault… Thomas would have never died.” And then the lights would go out.
Allie shivered and went back to cleaning. She shined the medal, hung it up again and went to the table and cleaned it. Then she went outside gathered some flowers and then brought them inside. She took a vase and placed the flowers in and then placed them on the table. And then she stopped. She took a broom and swept the floors, emptying it out in the barn yard. It was all crazy all the animals were running around. The horses were neighing and the cows… well they just stood there. Allie went back inside and looked up. “Two more years… then something bad will happen.” Said Allie. “Like what?” asked Kyle. Allie looked at the window. “Kyle!” said Allie. “Hey.” “Oh hold on.” Allie went into her mother’s room, took a basket and placed Jenny in and then walked outside. “This is Jenny.” Said Allie. “Man, who’s the father and boyfriend of her?” asked Kyle. Allie laughed and rolled her eyes. “I didn’t give birth to her Kyle, my mom did.” Said Allie. “Oh… your mom… huh, yeah… right…” said Kyle. “I was kidding with the-with the um… um… birth thing.” “It’s alright Kyle.” Said Allie. She brought it to Mrs. Johnson and then she and Kyle and went and sat by a tree and began talking.
