Chapter One
Sophie, Claire, and Elizabeth sat on my front porch playing Monopoly. Everything was quiet in my neighborhood and Sophie, Claire, and Elizabeth liked it. Claire lived in front of my house, Elizabeth lived to my right, and Sophie lived to the other side of my house. I stopped and sighed as I picked up a card. It was hot outside, almost burning. Elizabeth, Claire, Sophie, and I grabbed our bikes and started riding down the street. A old woman waved at the girls as her husband smoked. A man that was lonely waved and his dog barked. I felt the window through my hair. It felt great until Sophie skidded to a stop where her bike was sideways. She was staring straight ahead with beady eyes. “No, not them… not today.” She mumbled. We looked at what she was looking at; Drake, a mean man from school and his five friends; Justin, Ian, Ethan, Cameron, and Sam stood by him with their bikes. They rode up and went around us, trapping us. Drake and the boys got off the bikes and Drake walked up to Sophie. “Well, well, well….if it isn’t miss Pom Pom girl.” Said Drake. “Go away dumby, and plus my name is Sophie… not ‘Pom Pom girl’. “Sure whatever you say ‘Pom Pom girl’.” Laughed Drake. Ian looked at me then elbowed Drake. Drake looked at me then smiled. “And you… well I asked you to go out with me…” he said. My friends gasped and looked at me. “When was that?” I lied. “Oh you don’t remember… how cute… ok, everybody sit down.” He said. I started to sit like everybody else when he stopped me. “Ok, see this girl? Yeah on the picnic to the bank while all of you guys were playing, I walked up to her. She was picking up our mess and I said, ‘Want to go out?’” Everybody gasped and my friends looked at me, I sighed and looked at him. “Go on…” I said. I felt Elizabeth gasp. Drake sighed and said, ‘No you hurt Sophie’. And then I said, ‘Look at her, she’s playing, not even helping you and you still don’t want to go out with me. Come on, my dad has a car.’ She shook her head and when she shook her head… well this come to a shocker but she kissed me.” He lied at the end. Everybody gasped. “NO I DIDN’T! I WOULDN’T KISS YOUR UGLY OLD CHEEK ANYWAY!” I screamed. Everybody was silent and Drake stood up to me. “Ok then… then why did Flynn walk away from you when he was trying to kiss you?” asked Drake. I was silent, actually everything was silent. I looked down at my feet. “Because he saw Ashley Burger!” said Drake, turning around to my friends. “And he left Maria in the dust!” Everything was quiet and Elizabeth stepped up to me when Drake snapped, “Sit down!” And Elizabeth sat. I looked at him, pushed him to the ground, and yelled, “I’D NEVER DATE YOU!” And then my friends and I grabbed our bikes and started to ride. I heard Drake yell, “GET MARIA!” And I heard pedaling. “Maria… down the alley.” Said Sophie. Sophie looked at Elizabeth and Claire, “You guys go get help.” Elizabeth and Claire turned down the alley to the left while Sophie and I turned down the right. Drake and two of the boys went down the alley towards us. The others to Elizabeth and Claire. I kept pedaling…and pedaling, I felt my heart hurting and I wanted to stop but I couldn’t. I kept pedaling until after thirty minutes we reached my house where my mom stood out by the door with Elizabeth and Claire. The two boys she was holding by the ears and the last one lying on the floor crying. Drake, Ian, and Ethan stopped and stared up at my mom. Sophie and I climbed on the porch by my mom. Mom threw the boys at Drake, Ethan, and Ian and said, “Go away.” Drake, Ian, Ethan, Sam, and Cameron ran away on their bikes.
~~~~~~~
That night Elizabeth, Claire, and Sophie spent the night. When we were in our room doing our nails we heard an old pickup truck and looked at each other and said, “Drake.” And went on painting. Suddenly a rope threw up and caught onto my bedspread. “It’s Dylan’s!” I said, and started to pull up the rope. Elizabeth, Claire, and Sophie started to help and in a few seconds our friend [that’s a boy] climbed into my bedroom. “Dylan!” we said. “Hey guys…” Dylan paused when he saw my finger nail polish. And then he saw makeup and lotion and towels and clothes. “Uh…” he said. “Oh um… you might want to go downstairs and play football for a little bit.” Sophie said, rubbing her head. I could tell she loved Dylan. For once she made us swear not to tell him before telling us. And we all accepted. Dylan walked outside of the room and closed it. When we finished our nails we went and took a shower then got in our pajamas and then we combed our hair, put lotion on, and put makeup on. Then we called Dylan up. When Dylan came up he sat on my bed and said. “Today a girl moved over to my house.” Said Dylan, popping one of my Hershey Bars into his mouth. “She’s cool, name’s Sally.” He said, chewing through his Hershey Bar. When he swallowed it and went to get another we turned to Sophie and saw her face was sour. When Dylan turned back her face turned to happy. She was batting her eyes [which was her flirting thing] and smiled even more. We smiled then turned away and scratched our heads. Dylan shook his head. “Ok seriously Sophie,” he popped another Hershey Bar into his mouth, “You need to stop doing that.” Sophie lowered her bright smile and said, “Oh yeah… sorry… just trying to be weird.” And we all started talking but once in a while we noticed Sophie look out the window towards Dylan’s house.
~~~~~~~~~~~
At a quarter to twelve, Dylan left my house and we all sat down and began talking. “So Sophie, you going to kiss Dylan?” asked Claire, laughing. “Yeah, go kissy goo goo eyes on him Sophie.” Said Elizabeth. “Yeah, he’ll love you.” I said. “Shut up!” Sophie repeated after our remarks. She started to blush. “Ohh…. Sophie got kissed by somebody.” Said Claire, reading Sophie’s mind. “What? No… well maybe.” Said Sophie. “Ohh.. tell us all about him.” We said. “Uh…. Um… Uh…” said Sophie. “What?” asked Claire. “Cat got your tongue?” asked Elizabeth. “No… just um… uh… You guys know Ethan Hitler, right?” asked Sophie. “Yeah!” we said. “Um… uh… he um… he um kissed me..” said Sophie, looking down. “What?” we asked. “Um… Ethan Hitler kissed me.” Said Sophie. “Ethan Hitler?!” we yelled.
Chapter Two
The next morning when we woke up we dressed and met up with Dylan. When we were walking down the street Dylan and his gang pulled up. And everybody [expect Dylan] glanced at Ethan Hitler at Dylan’s right. He was looking at Sophie, who was looking at Dylan who was looking at Drake. Drake sneered when he saw Dylan, got off his bike, and walked over to Dylan and shoved him on the ground. “Think you’re taking Maria aren’t you?” snapped Drake. “W-What?” stuttered Dylan. I closed my eyes and said, “Oh no! Drake he didn’t do anything that was a lie to keep you from dating me.” I said. “Then how about the time you were holding hands?” he asked. Sophie looked at me and I looked at her. She looked mad. “I held his hand because I knew you were watching for me…” I said. Sophie looked away. “Hmm…. Ok for your paying for the lie you have to kiss me so pucker up!” Drake started to lean in with puckered lips. I thought he was going to get a kiss when a hand slapped Drake’s face. And he fell on the ground. I turned to see Sophie. “Don’t touch her!” she yelled. I noticed a bruise on Drake’s face when he looked at us. “Come on Pom Pom girl, how about you take her place?” he asked. “Only in your dreams,” said Sophie, putting a hand on her hip. “I will never kiss a boy who used to pick his boogers and wipe them on the kindergarten rug!” Everybody gasped, even Drake’s gang. “How did you know?” asked Drake. “Uh… you did it in public when you thought everybody was watching Mrs. Tire read Rapenzul.” Said Sophie. Drake’s face whitened and he pined Sophie to the ground. “Come on Drake!” said Dylan, trying to pull Drake off. Drake pushed Dylan to the floor and Dylan sunk, hitting his arm and started to scream. A woman came outside and yelled, “Drake, leave that poor girl alone! And what’s happened to that boy?!” Drake saw Dylan laying on the street screaming and he saw the woman got off and said, “What are you going to do about it?!” When the woman went in Drake and his friends got on their bikes and started to ride. Drake yelled over his shoulder, “You got away this time Maria!” And when the woman came out the boys had gone down the alley. The woman walked over and brought us to her car and drove us home and then she drove Dylan to the hospital. Mom came outside when I saw sitting on the porch steps and looked at me. “Maria, did something happen?” I looked at her and said, “No… just bored I guess.” “Come on inside, I made brownies.” She said. I looked down the street and saw Drake and his gang look around then go towards the trees leading to the woods. I stood up and thought Our clubhouse! I opened the door and said, “Never mind mom… Sophie yelling for me to come play again!” Then I closed the door and knocked on Sophie’s door. “What?” she asked. “Come on, go get Claire! I got Elizabeth!” I said. “Why?” asked Sophie. “No time to explain… just… come on!” Sophie ran to Claire’s house and I ran to Elizabeth’s and when we were together we started to run. “Why are we going to the clubhouse?” asked Sophie, jumping over a root. “Because… Drake and his gang are going there!” I said, pushing a branch out of my face. “But… wait, what?” asked Elizabeth. We stopped and ducked behind a bush that was by our clubhouse. There was Drake and his gang inside our clubhouse. “Man, this place is boring! Look at this needle point, dolls, tea set, and a dollhouse! There’s even a radio on a Christian channel!” said Drake, turning on our radio. “Man there’s nothing to reck… or steal that’s good…” said Ian. “What about the radio?” asked Cameron. “It does look good.” Said Sam. “Good idea, what do you think Drake?” asked Ethan, looking at Drake. “Hmm…. Let’s see if we can change it to our channel…” We grinned because we had a lock that they couldn’t change the channels without a code. “Dang it! The girls may have stupid things but they are smart to make it where we can’t change it!” said Drake. We heard snapping of fingers and we giggled. Then it was still silence. We heard our door open and close and they ran. We ran inside and checked. “Everything’s here!” said Sophie, checking the library. “All clear!” said Elizabeth, where she had checked our sewing section. “Clear!” said Claire, checking the radio room. “All clear!” I said, checking the window seats. “Hmm what could they have done?” I asked. Claire lifted our special rug that held a door. We looked at each other and opened it. “Whatever they wanted they got it…” I said. I looked at each other. “Our diaries are gone.”
Chapter Three
Diaries the one thing all girls keep. And ours’ were gone. “Drake, Ethan, Ian, Sam, and Cameron are all going to know our feelings… our first kisses… our crushes…” said Elizabeth. “Oh no! They’re going to tell Dylan I like him!” said Sophie. “And they are going to know I kissed… Henry from Science class!” said Claire. “And they are going to know my brother ran away from home because of me!” I said. “Oh no!” we all said. “Revenge…” said Sophie. “What?!” we asked. “Revenge! Don’t you see the boys are going to bring our diaries so they can read them in their clubhouse in Drake’s backyard tomommrow! All boys do that! We can get them in French period, Mrs. Hare always goes to the bathroom!” said Sophie. “Oh…” we said. So it was settled.
~~~~~~~~
The next day at school Sophie, Elizabeth, Claire, and I were tempted to just reach in the boys’ desks, bring our diaries out, and run to the clubhouse to check on the diaries. But we couldn’t because Mrs. Fern came turning around every two seconds to see if anybody was talking or passing notes or just playing around. Mrs. Fern sat in the front of the room behind the big blackboard. Her desk had two bins; the finished bin [where we turn homework in] and the unfinished bin [where we turn our unfinished homework in] and the finished bin was full expect for the boys’ papers expect Black Blue, a boy who’s parents love colors and research. The bell rang meaning school was over for the day. Sophie, Elizabeth, Claire and I walked, grabbed our lunches and walked out of the classroom. When the classroom was empty we hid and watch Mrs. Fern come out and go down to the bathroom. Sophie, Claire, Elizabeth, and I slipped into the classroom and went to the boys’ desks. They were empty expect piles of notes and books and binders. “Check the cubbies.” Said Sophie. We checked their cubbies and found them. “Come on…” said Elizabeth. When we walked out we crashed into nobody but Drake and his friends.
~~~~~~~
Our books were scattered everywhere, our hair clips had fallen out, our diaries were on the ground. Drake and his friends looked at us and smirked. “Ha, we thought you would do this.” Said Drake, snatching up our diaries. “Give them back Drake.” Said Sophie, standing up, apparently not caring about how her hair looked. “And to you Sophie,” said Drake, opening Sophie’s diary. “Give it back!” said Sophie, reaching up for her diary. But Drake held it out of her reach and read; Dear Diary, today I met the cutest boy named Dylan. Elizabeth met him at the county fair a couple of years ago and he is so cute! I love him more than a THOUSAND UNICORNS!!!!
I’ve found my love life-
Sophie
“How touching,” said Drake, looking at Sophie. She had lowered herself and was staring with tears in her eyes. “You didn’t think you could keep secrets from me forever do you Pom Pom girl?” he asked. “STOP CALLING ME THAT!” yelled Sophie, and pushed him to the ground. Her diary slid across the floor to the windows. Sophie pinned Drake and started screaming, “YOU SWEAR NOT TO TELL DYLAN?!” Drake was trying hard not to scream but instead he said, “Let go of me!” Sophie shook her head and said, “SAY IT!” She twisted his arm backwards and started to push it up. “OW!! I SWEAR I WON’T DYLAN!” he said. “SWEAR NOT TO TELL DYLAN WHAT?!” screamed Sophie. She pushed his arm up farther. “OWWW!!! I SWEAR NOT TO TELL DYLAN YOU LIKE HIM!” screamed Drake. Sophie got off and went Drake stood up he stared at Sophie. “You stupid pom pom girl! You’re ugly and I can tell you; Dylan will never fall for a stupid girl like you!” he stomped on Sophie’s diary then he and his friends ran out of school. We grabbed all our books and our diaries and ran into the bathroom to check on our hair.
“Stupid Drake!” said Sophie, putting her clip back in her hair and grabbed her lipstick. “Why does he have to be such a rat?” asked Claire, taking her head band and putting it back in. “Why does he hate you anyways?” asked Elizabeth. Sophie looked in the mirror with her mascara. “Because in kindergarten I slapped him when he tried to kiss me.” Said Sophie. “All before the war happened?” asked Claire. Everybody was quiet. Especially Sophie and I. “Yeah… yeah before Samson and Kevin left…” said Sophie. I lowered my head. Kevin, my older brother, had been sent to WW11. He had been gone for two years, just as long as Samson, Sophie’s brother, had been gone. When we were done we grabbed our stuff and ran out of the school to the house. The house was perfectly fine. We remembered that Drake and his friends had skipped detention and had gone on out. We all opened our diaries [which were perfectly fine] and wrote in them about today and yesterday. “Stupid old Drake…” mumbled Sophie. “Hey guys I’m throwing a sleepover this Friday, want to come?” asked Elizabeth. “Yeah!” we said and began writing about the sleepover yet to come.
Chapter Four
Friday, after school, I went home to pack for Elizabeth’s sleepover party. I grabbed my night gown and shoved it in my bag, grabbed my shorts and a T-shirt and my sneakers and shoved them in, I grabbed my toothbrush, hairbrush, and a sleeping bag. Before I dashed out the door mom shouted, “On Wednesday is the last day of school-“ and then I shut the door. I walked over to Elizabeth’s house and walked in. “Hi Mrs. Davis.” I said, waving to Elizabeth’s mom, who was feeding George, Elizabeth’s little brother. I walked up to Elizabeth’s room who was listening to the World War 2 broadcast, which was on a Christian station. I dropped my bag and ran over to the radio. “Outside in the Eastern side, two men have died but we can’t see… there’s too much dust…” It went back to the Christian music. I looked at Elizabeth. “What if it’s Kevin or Samson?” Elizabeth and I started to talk and get a bath ready. We put bath bombs in and when Claire and Sophie arrived, we took off our clothes, and jumped in. We played around and after a while Mrs. Davis came up and said, “Girls stop getting the floor wet, it’s leaking through the ceiling.” When she left we sat in the tub and laughed and started talking about Wednesday, the last day of school. “I’ve discovered I have monkey toes!” said Claire. And under the water she pinched me with my toes, then Elizabeth, then Sophie. After we finished dying of laughter Sophie said, “Hey use that on Drake and I think he’ll scream like a little girl.” And then Sophie acted like Drake getting pinched by Claire’s toes. She yelled, “OWW CLAIRE STOP IT YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE MY UGLY FACE TURN UGLIER!” We all laughed and then got out of the tub and blow dried our hair and rolled our hair up in rolls. Then we put on our pajamas and clipped our nails and listen to the Christian music on the radio and talked. “So Elizabeth, what’s for dinner?” asked Claire, clipping her big monkey toe. “Chicken, Mom got it fresh.” Said Elizabeth, clipping her pinkie toe on her right foot. “Hey guys watch this.” Said Sophie. She bent her big toe back towards her face, clipped it and while clipping it let go off the toe and the toe nail soared through the air and crashed on the ground leaving us to laugh our hearts out. “Sophie use that on Drake.” I laughed, wiping my tears of laughter. When we finished clipping our toe nails Mrs. Davis called and we ran downstairs.
~~~~~~~~~
After eating the chicken we went upstairs and began removing the finger nail polish from my house. Once we were done we painted our nails. For my right foot I picked pink and purple with black hearts. On the left foot black and red and a skull. On my right hand, I picked silver and white with a snowflake and on the left foot black and yellow with a sun. When my nails were dry I added the stickers[the skull, heart, snowflake, and sun] and then I removed the toe thing that held our toes apart from one another. After that I began removing my makeup so the next morning my mascara wouldn’t have smeared. Elizabeth soon joined me, then Sophie, then Claire. And then Elizabeth brought out fake tattoos and I chose an angel [because my mom won’t allow any violent tattoos] and a ‘BFFL’ one. Then I took warm water, took the plaster off the tattoos and placed them on my arm, held the warm rag on the tattoos for thirty seconds then lifted the rag off. When we pulled the paper off there were our fake tattoos. After that we rubbed lotion [that smelled like daisies] on us and then we began rubbing this lotion to get dead skin off our feet and hands and then after that we washed the dead skin off and began laying our sleeping bags out. Then we got ready for bed and went to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, during the afternoon, my mom called telling me to come home. When I came home Mom and Dad were sitting on the sofa. “What’s wrong?” I asked, dropping my sleeping bag down by the door. “Maria, Kevin… Kevin’s coming home.” Said Mom. “What?” I asked, standing up. “He’s coming home Maria, Kevin is coming home.”
Chapter Five
The next day we stood at the bus stop waiting for the bus. I was holding up a sign that read ‘Kevin James’ and stood there waiting. When the bus came a couple of men hopped off. A boy with tall brown hair with green eyes made his way through the crowd to us. “Kevin!” I said. I ran and hugged Kevin. Kevin swept me up and kissed me. Mom ran up and cried because he was alive and hugged him and kissed him. Then Dad and Kevin hugged and we rode home in the station wagon. We got home Mom, Dad, and I celebrated with Kevin and I fell asleep listening to Kevin’s army story.
The next day, I went over to Sophie’s house. Sophie was laying on her bed looking at a picture of Samson. I walked over to her. “Where’s Samson at?” I asked. She looked up at me then at the picture, traced her brother’s face and said, “He didn’t make it.” I suddenly felt sorry for Sophie and bad for myself. “His metals are in my mom and dad’s room.” Melissa cried and cried. “They were… engaged.” Said Sophie. Suddenly I felt sorry for this Melissa girl and Sophie. “Mom swore she’s never going to love anybody again…” said Sophie, bowing her head. “My mom and dad… they’re divorcing.” I felt real, real bad. Things just kept getting worse and worse for Sophie. “And my mom… I don’t think she’s taking me. She hates me. She doesn’t love me anymore. I asked her last night and she said, ‘After Samson’s death, I’ll never love anybody again.’” HOW COME THINGS KEPT GETTING WORSE AND WORSE FOR THIS GIRL!? ALL THESE THINGS ARE HAPPENING BECAUSE OF SAMSON’S DEATH?! “And Melissa was about to have Junior, Samson’s son when-“But I yelled, “OK STOP I GET IT!” Sophie was quiet, she bowed her head and said, “The point is… I think I’m moving.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday came and went and everybody was celebrating. While Elizabeth, Claire, and I were at the clubhouse celebrating Sophie was at home crying. Finally we had, had enough of it. “SOPHIE STOP CRYING!” We yelled at her. That was a mistake and we quickly learned because Sophie’s mom kicked us out of her house. We needed to do something.
Two weeks after being kicked out of Sophie’s house we saw Sophie outside and walked up to her. “Sophie…um sorry about everything. Can you forgive us?” we asked. “Nope.” Said Sophie. Our jaws dropped. “I can forgive you forever and ever.” Said Sophie. We all hugged her and linked hands. “Friends forever?” asked Sophie, looking at all of us. “Friends forever.” We said and ran to the club house.
The end
